InactiveFirst of all I would like to aplogize for this gross subject… Taylor has started to spit up a lot more now and it has been typically 30-45 mins after her feeding. It is a small to moderate amount mucousy and smells horrible like adult vomit. She doesn’t seem bothered by it. She is just playing laughing and it happens. Is that normal or is just suppose to smell like formula? I didn’t experience this with Alexis when she spit up it would but immediately during or after her bottles so it was straight formula. I’m just questioning is it normal to smell so horrible or is because she needs to be on a higher dose of Prilosec to help lower the acid in her tummy. Once again sorry for the yucky subject.

InactiveThe only time my babies’ spit up smelled really bad was when they had a stomach virus, or when it was acidic from reflux. Otherwise it usually didn’t smell much at all when it was breast milk, or smelled like the formula they were drinking.
Does it smell acidic? Or just gross? A stomach virus can produce really gross smelling puke. If it’s a stomach virus is should pass in a few days.
I hope it passes soon. If not maybe a higher PPI dose is the way to go.

InactiveIf she is vomitting food (or formula) that’s been sitting around in the stomach for a long time, then I thought that it was normal for it to stink. Hailey’s always smelled rancid!!!! Just like adult vomit. If it was a vomit immediately after a meal, like with a burp- more like I would call a voluminous spit up- then it never smelled b/c it was just undigested milk. For the most part, Hailey’s vomits always smelled, especially if you didn’t get to them right away and it dried somewhere. YUCK!
I’m interested to hear what others think about this.

InactiveI don’t know, Lori. My kids’ puke never smelled badly unless they were sick. Even with Myles’ DGE, and puking hours after he ate, it didn’t stink. Only before he was on meds there was that classic acidic smell, and there was that soy smell when he was on soy forumula.
I’m interested in what others have to say, too.

InactiveMatthew’s spit up and vomit STINKS. Really – it is so normal. Food may be more or less broken down in different babies. I really would not worry about it.

InactiveI’m glad to hear from everyone. It just as you decribed smells rancid and it just gets worse since it is on her clothes. I haven’t gone through so much laundry with Alexis, but I guess every baby and their reflux is different. Thanks everyone!

InactiveWhen my son does spit up it smells terrible because he is on Alimentum. I think that stuff smells worse coming back up than it does in the bottle.
