Inactivehas anyone ever noticed that their child spit up more on the prevacid. he has begun spitting up significantly more right when we started the prevacid. he was almost down to 1 or 2 spit ups a day and now its like 10. and i noticed this when he was on it before that he spit up less when we got off! does this make any sence??
and the sleep was very very well the 1st 2 days back on meds.. and now its bad again. i dont think its the ear infection anymore because he finished all his antibiotics.
any thoughts?February 5, 2007 at 5:11 pm #24138Anonymous
InactiveSometimes the antibiotics don’t work because some of these strains are resistant; so they have to try another antibiotic.
Myles puked constantly, and I didn’t take him off Prevacid until he had stopped throwing up, so I can’t say if there was a difference or not.
Maybe the rice milk?
I hope he’s sleeping better soon.

InactiveLauren,
I was told that Prevacid can delay gastric emptying in some babies. That might be the reason for his increased spitting up. It affects different babies differently.February 5, 2007 at 7:50 pm #24154Anonymous
InactiveWhat antibiotic did you give him? I’m guessing it was zithromax or something similar since you said you’re already done? If that’s the case…the dose is complete in just a few short days but the medicine still works in your system for 7-10 days like a regular antibiotic. So maybe he’s still not quite feeling 100% yet???
Sorry don’t know much about the spit up.

InactiveYes, that’s true (about the Zithromax). The last time Myles was on it I ended up taking him back to the doctor thinking his infection hadn’t cleared up because he was so irritable, the doc said he was fine. He said the Zithromax could still be bothering him even though he’d had his last dose. A few days later his mood improved dramatically, so I do think that’s what was bothering him.
I’d still take Shane in though, just to be sure his ears are ok.

Inactiveohh wow thanks both of those replys really help.
heather-if it does delay gastric empting in him than should i try something else?
amy- i am using the zithromax again.. i didnt really think of it like that, hopefully than it is just his ears.

InactiveI’d keep him on Prevacid as long as it’s helping his pain. Myles had DGE and puked up alot of what he ate, but he was pain free and gaining, so the doctor was comfortable with it and felt we should leave things as they were. I’m glad I did because he did very well despite the spitting and puking and his weight was always fine.
Hopefully his ears are fine. The Zithromax stays in the body for 10 days even though you only give it for five days, so they can have tummy aches for the whole 10 days. Maybe that’s what’s bothering him.

InactiveHow did Shane do on Prevacid before you took him off? Did he spit up quite a bit then? I agree to keep him on it for a while longer but if his reflux and spitting up continue to be a problem in the next few weeks then maybe look into a different PPI?
My guess also is that his ears haven’t healed completely from the zithromax. Give it a few more days.
Good luck!!!!

Inactiveo.k the doctor said he still has an ear infection in one ear and not the other anymore. so, they gave him a shot of an antibiotic! it was horrible!

InactiveOh, poor baby.
In a way it’s good news though because it may explain the eating problem and hopefully the shot will help him get over it now. I hope he’s feeling better soon.

InactiveLauren,
I would probably keep him on the Prevacid too if it’s helping him, unless he stops gaining weight from spitting up or something. Also, I took Zithromax for a sinus infection once and it made me really sick. I was nauseated and didn’t want to eat either! It also made my stomach cramp. So I wonder if that was what was making him spit up more. Glad you were able to get the shot. I hope it does the trick.
