InactiveThis has been a question of mine, too, so I’ll share with you what is working (sort of) for us. Nathan is on 30 mg of Prevacid, and we have been playing around with how to divide it up to give him 24-hour relief. Basically, we’ve found out that he can’t get 24-hour relief on this dose, even with Zantac added back in — BUT he is doing much better.
At first, we were giving it in 3 doses of 10 mg. He nurses 5 times a day, so I would give it before the 1st, 3rd, and last feedings. He was finally a happy baby for the most part, but still would wake up screaming in pain from all his naps after just 30-45 minutes (he takes 3 naps/day) and would cry in his sleep some overnight. So I decided to divide it into 2 doses of 15 mg instead, one before the first feeding and the other before the last feeding of the day. Now that we’ve been doing this, he has consistently (knock on wood) taken a 1 1/2 to 2-hour nap after the first feeding for the past 2 weeks. And he’s sleeping more soundly through the night. The middle of the day and afternoons are still kind of rough — I agree that the dose wears off in just a few hours because Nathan’s second and third naps are usually cut short by reflux pain.
So I guess what I’m saying is that for us, we had to decide when Nathan needed the most relief and time the meds that way. I also have a 2-year-old little guy who is full of energy all morning wanting to play with Mommy, so for us, I really needed Nathan to sleep a good morning nap 🙂 Then my 2-year-old goes down for his nap after lunch, and that’s when I can give Nathan more attention… so it’s not so bad that he doesn’t nap well in the afternoon. Not ideal, I know, but for now it’s the best we can seem to manage.I’d recommend just playing around with the timing/dosages and see what works for you. I’ve found that it’s best to give changes like that at least a few days to see how it settles out.About the morning dose….my Nathan is a good bit younger than Adi, but the only way I can hold him off for 30 minutes is to take him outside for an early-morning stroll around the block. Does Adi like being outside? Is that feasible for you? I don’t know what I’m going to do when the weather turns cold, though!! Is there anything that distracts her (books, music, even TV)?Hope this helps!! Good luck!!!September 24, 2007 at 10:36 pm #43250Anonymous
InactivePaula, thank you so much for your input….so I wasn’t the only one who realized that the dose lasts 4-5 hrs tops!!!!!!Now I feel better knowing someone else is having the same issues.
Do you use solutabs, compounded, or capsules????I started w/ caracream but she hated the taste and would scream when she saw the syringe!!!So we went to the capsules. Are the 30 mg capsules any stronger than the 15 mg or just more medicine inside the capsule???I gues I’ll try 15 15 and 15. Thankfully my dad is a dr so he writes the script for medicines…so she is on the higher dosage. WE will try this dosage for a month and then try to wan her down to 30.September 25, 2007 at 7:01 am #43258Anonymous
InactiveWe use the Prevacid packets — the powder stuff that you mix with water — because the lactose in the Solutabs was bothering Nathan. Sorry, I’m really not familiar with how the capsules work….maybe someone else can chime in??
I was wondering how you got a 45-mg prescription!!! That is great! I really think my Nathan needs that much, but I know there’s no way his ped will go that high. I’m just really thankful we finally got up to 30 mg! We are using Zantac in the middle of the day to get through the afternoon, and it helps a little….but not like another dose of Prevacid would.September 25, 2007 at 9:57 am #43266Anonymous
InactiveThere’s lactose in the solutabs??? We just started those today and my little one has a dairy intolerance. Great!
One more frustration with the GI specialist. I guess we need something else now.-StephSeptember 25, 2007 at 10:46 am #43267Anonymous
InactiveYes, I found out from the other moms on this site that the Prevacid solutabs contain some lactose. I don’t think it bothers most babies, even those with milk protein intolerance, but we have a family history of lactose intolerance as well. On the solutabs, Nathan was pooping several times a day, which I know is not that unusual for a breastfed baby, but he was down to just 1 or 2 bm’s a day until he got on the solutabs, then went up to 4 or 5 times a day and had really stinky gas. Now that he’s on the packets, he’s back down to 1 bm a day or even every other day. On the Solutabs, he was also having insomnia — kind of staring off into space with a really tired look but not being able to fall asleep for HOURS. Sometimes he would drift off for just a minute and then be wide awake again for another couple of hours. My older son is lactose intolerant, so I had seen these signs before. But I would have never known the solutabs had lactose in them if it weren’t for this site!! The doctors don’t tell you much 🙂
Maybe the Solutabs won’t bother Vanessa?? They are definitely easier to give so I would try them first, then maybe move to another form of Prevacid if necessary.

InactiveThanks Paula. Speaking of the solutabs being easier to give…my first experience this morning didn’t go very well. She ended up with half of it on her shoulder. Water rolls out of their mouths really easily!!

I was told to give her half a tablet but dissolve the whole thing. So I’m supposed to just squirt half of the liquid in her mouth. Yeah right!! All of the little balls that don’t dissolve just sit in the end of the syringe. So she will either get all of them or none. I don’t know how to give her just half. Do you have any words of wisdom?? Or anyone else??September 25, 2007 at 11:53 am #43270Anonymous
InactiveMy dad writes the scripts for the 45mg, and even with this, she still isn’t a great eater and has feeding therapy once a week.

InactiveYou have to dissolive the meds just before you use them. They lose thier effective ness after 15 min once dissolved. Cut tab in half and put the other half in alum foil until you need to use it later, light can degrade the med as well.

InactiveSteph,
Since Vanessa is almost 4 months old, I would probably just put half a tablet inside her mouth (toward the back inner cheek) and hold it there for a few seconds til her saliva starts to dissolve it. Then I used to fill a little dropper with water and give that to help the medicine go down, keeping his mouth closed by gently pushing up on his chin. But other moms may have much better advice, since we didn’t stay on the Solutabs very long.Good luck!September 25, 2007 at 4:14 pm #43308Anonymous
InactiveThanks for the advice Beth and Paula! Hopefully I will get better at this as the week goes on.
The good news is…when I went to visit her at lunch today, the sitter told me she napped for an hour all by herself. Meaning she didn’t have to fall asleep being held first. Normally that’s the only way we can get her to sleep. Yay!
