InactiveStacey, that doc does sound like an idiot! It always amazes how some of these specialists can have absolutely NO bedside manner and still have a full waiting room.
To answer your question, a digital rectal exam is when they stick a finger up their bum (same as for adults).

Inactiveeveryone is so great on this site!!!
Thank you so much for replying! Patti – I try really hard to not think about the possiblity that Rowan could still be breastfeeding… my lactation consultant (an angel!) questioned the possibility that it was not the breastmilk and also offered to help me with an elimination diet. there is no doubt that he reacted to the nutramigen with the horrible rash and blood and he would scream and scream immediately after breastfeeding, but I often wonder if he was on medication for reflux if it would not have been so bad. I was so happy to be successfully breastfeeding (never got the hang of it with my first son) with both my husband and I suffering from allergies it is inevitable that my son’s will have them – it gave me a bit of hope that the breastfeeding would help as much as it could. Well at this point he seems to respond ok to elecare – very hard to tell because we are so early in trying the prevacid. His ped. did not recommend going back to breastmilk (I asked if I could give him some of the milk I had frozen to see if he would still react the same way). I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the right combination. The gas is horrible though which is the next obsticle to tackle. Rowan was smiling today and making bubbles – such a wonderful sight after so many weeks of pain and crying. He is my sweet little guy, just trying to get it right for him. Patti – how long did you stop breastfeeding for that you were able to go back to it? I still have periodic let down throughout the day and worry that I should try to keep my supply just in case.stacey

InactiveI just wanted to point out the the gas pain could be colic (still
related to the GERD, Elijah has bad gas at times)and that there can be
red blood from constipation/ hard stools where the stool makes tiny
tears around the rectum. Some of the Mylantas or Maalox have simethicone in them and you can
also buy simethicone for babies OTC. This is a med that helps with gas
bubbles.Just some more options to consider, and of course, consult your pedi or
pharmacist to see if there are any contraindications with other meds.April 26, 2006 at 12:10 pm #6878Anonymous
InactiveStacey,
I had stopped breastfeeding for about a month and a half before I started up again. My lactation consultant told me to take Fenugreek supplements to get my milk going again, and it really did work (there is a great supplement out there from Motherlove, called More Milk Plus, http://www.motherlove.com). I haven’t gotten back to where I was, and am still supplementing with soy formula, but it is great to have that bonding experience again. The way my lactation consultant put it was that even if he was getting 5% breastmilk and 95% formula, the 5% was better than nothing. Somehow that made me feel better. Also, I did keep pumping (hope you are able to do so also), as my pediatrician had initially recommended to keep the breastmilk in the freezer until after he was 4 months and then give it to him. I guess their digestive systems tend to settle down by then. Hope that helps…hang in there, it really does get better once they are medicated properly.

InactiveI took fenugreek and blessed thistle to increase my milk supply. I was considering trying domperidone as well, but the above really worked (too well)!

InactiveOne of the Worldwide health organizations has a pamphlet about relactating with a child under age 2.
This is for those moms who are in war zones or refugee camps and can’t
get formula or milk for their babies and might not have much food for
themselves.Very interesting.
I hope all goes well!
