InactiveOk, so my baby girl was always spitting up with occasional vomiting. Dr. said she had mild case of reflux- she was gaining weight and a very happy baby- good sleeper too. At almost 8 mos old she was regularly taking lactose formula bottles of 6 to 8 oz, eating solids, etc. when (almost 3 weeks ago) she suddenly began vomiting- vomited 3 or 4 times turned to dry heaving with small amounts of clear liquid- all over the course of about 2 hours. It looked like a stomach virus. We called the dr. and put her on pedialyte until the next evening when we started to reincorporate small amounts of her normal lactose formula. She tolerated it well and the dr. said we could go back to a normal menu the following day. She vomited the next morning during her bottle. We went in to the dr. office and he suggested soy formula. When we got home I gave her 2 oz of it and she vomited. I waited and gave her pedialyte and she vomited again. Dr. said to go slower- very small amounts. The following day she did fine- increasing amounts of soy formula throughout the day so she could take a 2 oz bottle (in 1 oz increments). Dr. said to switch back to lactose formula bust still small amounts- she tolerated it for almost 2 days and vomited again. We switched back to soy. She went for five days on soy formula only vomiting if I gave her more than 1.5 oz at a time (4-5 oz bottle in 3-4 increments). Then on Saturday (Day 12 after original vomiting) I tried solids again- 2.5 hours later we gave her a bottle and she began vomiting and dry heaving again- for almost 3 hours. We went to the dr. on Sunday and in 12 days (Thursday-Sunday) she had lost 6 ounces (14lb.14oz to 14lb.8oz.). The dr. was worried and confused. He started her on reflux med (Cimetidine) and switched to Nutramigen formula). Also ordered stool samples and had us come back on Thurs to check weight. Between Sunday and Thursday she had occasional vomiting after solid foods (all that she had eaten before). Thursday weight had remained the same. He sent us to a GI specialist. GI spec did not do any more tests just maybe 8 minutes of talking to us. He switched her to Prevacid. Haven’t received results from stool samples yet but drs. think maybe a stomach virus jump started the reflux. But I don’t know why that would cause vomiting/heaving the second time 12 days later… Has anyone else had episodes like this? I am not convinced. Especially since she sleeps well and is happy. I haven’t found anything on the internet about episodes of heaving to this degree with reflux. Nutramigen seems to help- but she is having pretty serious diarrhea and I’m not sure that’s better. Also still spitting up a lot and occasional small vomits.
Sorry this post is soooo long, but I am hoping my experience is not unique and someone out there has seen something like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
