InactiveJust wondering if anyone’s tried the nutritional supplements like pediasure or the one made by enfamil. How do they taste? Are they okay for kids under a year. I’m looking for alternatives to put in a sippy… for now, she won’t take formula if I put it in there, and water offers no calories.
BTW, Thais, thanks for the tip on the duocal. We haven’t tried it yet b/c it needs a prescription here and no one will prescribe it for kids under a year.

InactiveARRGGG – i canĀ“t believe what you are going through with your medical system… i thought your ped had said somethign about increasing calories right…?

InactiveYou know — i think that it was you or maybe someone else who said that Duocal could only be given to babies older than 1… something about reading it on the website? Well here in Spain, it is very clear that the Duocal is also meant for newborns… it is so strange how everything is SO SO different. I just went to the websites and the UK and Spanish ones seem to OK it for infants vs teh US one that says not suitable for children under 1!!!

InactiveYou daughter is so close to a year, I don’t see any harm in getting some Pediasure to give as a supplement in a cup. I’ve never tasted it but I know big kids who drink it and so it must taste pretty decent. I think it comes in strawberry, vanilla and chocolate, right? It’s probably got an acquired taste about it.

InactiveI’m going to give it a try b/c she could use the calories.
Thais, ped said no to duocal, but okay to polycose which is OTC. I’m going to pick some up when I’m downtown at the hospital (the only place that carries it).

InactiveAh OK. Well it may help with the bowel movements the way Duocal does? I have tasted the duocal and there is no real taste to it… hopefully Polycose will be the same!

InactiveGood luck with the Polycose, Lori – when are you trying it?

InactiveNot for a while. The only place that carries it is the children’s hospital downtown. Otherwise I have to special order it and I don’t want to pay the fee. When I go down for Hailey’s GI appointment (2 weeks) I’ll pick some up. Thanks though.

InactiveHave you tried molasses water? Blackstrap molasses is full of nutrients like iron and I think calcium, it’s sweet and yummy, and has some calories. My mom used to make me fennel tea by boiling some fennel seeds in some water with sugar; it’s a natural remedy for gas. I’ve done it with molasses and it’s yummy and Ally loves it. You could try that, too, if it interests you.

InactiveLet me know how the Polycose trial goes. I’ve been thinking about trying it too. I was going to order it from the pharmacy, but it only came in a huge quanitity, and I didnt want to spend the money just in case Noah didnt like it. I wonder if there’s a way to get a sample?

InactiveLisa, we’re going to get some in two weeks. When I get it, I can put some in a ziploc baggy and mail it to you, if you want. Let me know.
As long as you’re not worried about it getting held up in the mail- “Really, I swear it’s not cocaine, it’s just polycose powder!!!”

InactiveLisa, BTW, how’s Noah doing these days?
March 14, 2006 at 5:07 pm #3837Anonymous
InactiveThanks for the offer. I may have to take you up on that.
There’s nothing new in our saga. Noah is getting tougher to deal with these days. He’s getting more of a mind of his own. I swear its getting so much harder to feed him. He spits out his solids and starts hitting me when I have the spoon in my hand. He isnt doing well with anything with texture. I have to wear a raincoat if I try to feed him anything that has the tiniest lumps in it. I end up wearing more than he eats. I use a lot of distraction; Baby Einstein videos, cartoons, the other children help entertain, etc. It’s such a chore. I feel like there is so much that we need to do to help him and its overwhelming. We’ll keep trying and hopefully some day soon it will “click” and he’ll love eating.
Are you having any progress with Hailey? I hope she’s doing better.

InactiveWe use the polycose in Christian’s bottles. It doesn’t appear to have flavor – I don’t notice it and it dissolves well in the water. We are using 2 1/2tsp for a 5oz bottle. It adds 8calories per teaspoon. My only concern was the glucose level but the PED and GI indicate that it is insignificant and is not likely to cause diabetes.
I go to Sam’s club and they order in a case (6 cans) and let me buy them one at a time for around $7/8 per can. I know that my Target also carries it behind the pharmacy counter but they charge $10 per can.
Good Luck with the polycose – it has added great calorie number to Christian’s diet. We are now concentrated (24 cal alimentum, 4 cal polycose, and 2 cal rice cereal per ounce) 30cals total.

InactiveLisa, sorry to hear that Noah is still not feeding well. I can certainly relate. Hailey is also no better. It’s so frustrating. Laura, thanks for the info about the polycose. I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time. Hang in there.
