InactiveQuick question – would it be possible for sweet peas to cause constipation? I only ask b/c a week and a half ago Sarah was constipated (hard to believe now with her exploding diarrhea!!!) The only thing I had changed in her diet was adding stage 2 sweet peas.
Anyway, in trying to think of ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to help alleviate her diarrhea, I wondered if giving her sweet peas might help “bind her back up!” ???
Anyone think it’s possible for sweet peas to have caused her constipation?

Inactivehmm maybe some rice cereal? bananas? not sure about peas haha, but why not try?

InactiveYes, I do think it’s possible. Myles used to get constipated from apples and spinach….so peas doesn’t surprise me! Also peas are very starchy and starches can constipate.
I’d try some rice milk and/or rice cereal. It always worked wonders when my girls had diarrhea. I did try it with Myles when he was so sick this time but it didn’t seem to help much which really surprised me because it almost always did the trick for my first two.
Here’s an idea I had yesterday that I might try next time Myles is sick with diarrhea. I’ve read that fiber will do both things….bind you when you need binding and loosen things when you need loosening (if you know what you mean). So, I’m going to try Benefiber if Myles ever has serious diarrhea again. I did start giving it to him today and I think it’s helping him get regular again. He was actually getting backed up already! It’s always something! The reason I think this might work is that the Pediatrician I spoke to on Saturday said that adding some bulk to the diet will help firm things up when a baby has diarrhea.
Getting back to the peas…I don’t think it would hurt to try them. Definitely lots of fiber and bulk there.

Inactivewow, i never knew benefiber did anything other than “loosen” things up a bit.
and what are sweet peas? i have never seen those. how are they different from regular peas? are they still green?

InactiveThey are Del Monte Nature’s Goodness stage 2 in a jar. They say sweet peas. I bought some Gerber stage 2 peas and they just say “peas”. Haven’t tried those yet…wonder if she’ll like the “peas” as much as the “sweet peas”. Yes, they are green and they make a lovely shade of spit up and poop.
Wal Mart only sells those 2 brands of baby food and depending on my mood (and coupon!), I buy one or the other. She tolerates both brands.Amy

InactiveA few other things that are good for diarrhea. All safe for babies:
1. Cook a batch of rice (for quite a long time) then drink the rice water. Works really well.
2. (This one isn’t the healthiest, but it works!): Make a batch of J-ello, but don’t let it firm up – just drink the warm J-ello water.
3. Psyllium Husks. You can get this at the health food store and it will work either way too – for diarrhea or constipation.

InactiveInteresting because peas are one of the foods that they told us were good to give for constipation- can’t remember what they were, but there were some “P” foods… peas, prunes, pears, can’t remember the rest. We recently started using benefibre and it works well for us. Started out at 1/2 tsp once daily, and adjusted upwards as needed. I believe that Sue was told to use it for Taylor starting in the hospital (sorry if I’m mixing up babies) so you can ask her.

InactiveI see that Sarah is on Alimentum, it’s too bad she can’t tolerate soy. There is an Isomil DF formula that is specifically for diarrhea. You aren’t supposed to use until you are fairly certain the bug/virus has run it’s course, with the thought being they don’t want you to bind them up if they still have the virus. But, when Brodie had a severe stomach flu (vomiting and diarrhea – sorry to be gross but it was pure water), by day 5 my ped. had me give him the Isomil DF. and by the next day, he had formed stools, by the following day, he was constipated!!! I couldn’t believe it. It is hard to find, but it is a thought. RLM4262006-12-13 14:7:55

InactiveYes, Benefiber is safe for babies….at least I can assume that it is based on info I read here about it being used in the Neonatal Unit for preemies. I’ve used it for Myles with no problems and it defintely seems to be helping him have regular stools again after his bout with diarrhea. I give him 1/2 tsp once per day. A few months ago when I started using it I gave him only 1/4 tsp.
From what I’ve read about fiber it can help both ways….binding when you have diarrhea….and moving things along when you are consitpated.
The rice water sounds like a great idea! Jello water also helps I’ve heard.
How’s Sarah doing today?

InactiveI am willing to try all these remedies!! I’ll have to make a “diarrhea grocery list”.
Sarah was in good spirits this morning. I DID have to change a dirty diaper this morning, but it didn’t leak through like all the others have. Soooo I was disappointed she was still going…but thankful it seems to be slowly firming back up. I’m back at school today so I’ll be anxious to hear about her day when I pick her up. She ate 8oz for me this morning which is HUGE compared to the past few days…but it seems like she’ll eat well in the morning and as the day goes on she doesn’t want to eat…so we’ll see. I’m so tired of this!!! Thanks for asking Christine!December 13, 2006 at 1:07 pm #20277Anonymous
Inactiveyep, Shane drinks his whole bottle in the morning 8 oz, than 6 oz for the 2nd, and the 3rd and 4th are about half of a bottle. i think his is from teething. well, whatever it is i think as the day goes on they probably feel worse, i know that is what i am like when i dont feel well.. at night i am a mess. but anyway its great she is slowly getting better! how is she with her solids now?

A diarrhea grocery list, hugh? I have a diarrhea survival kit in my pantry…..rice cereal, rice milk, jello, pedialyte, isomil. I’m ready for the next round, but hopefully we won’t need any of it.It must be so hard to be away from your little sweetie when she’s sick. I hope you come home and she’s all better today!
