InactiveWe are considering switching Ben from the 20mg. pack of Zegerid to the 40mg. He has a hard time keeping the med. down, so we added Mylanta to help with the taste. However, his gas has gotten out of control!! Dr. Phillips suggested the switch, but to keep adding the Mylanta in for the needed buffer. Has anyone had the same experience and found that the switch helped? He said that the Mylanta with the 40 mg. would reduce the gas and help with the taste, but I can’t figure out how this would be true when he would actually be getting more Mylanta on the 40 mg. pack. Is it because the sodium bicarb. is less too? I’m so confused, but I can’t stand my little stiff as a board and screaming anymore.

InactiveOn the 40 mg. packets you need to be giving 14 mgs. so you don’t have to add mylanta. It is because it doesn’t have enough sodium bicarb.

Inactiveyes the 40 mg packs do not have enough buffer, so if you are giving less than 3.5 ml per dose, then you need to add 2.5 ML of mylanta to every dose that you give.
honestly, a lot of babies cant handle the mylanta. my son couldnt, so we used the TUMS dissolvables, per dr philips suggestion. tums work as a buffer too but they dont create a laxative effect like mylanta supreme does.nataliachick72006-12-5 16:44:22

InactiveNatalia,
Do you think it’s the Mylanta that he can’t handle? Is it the culprit causing the gas and pain? Did the Mylanta give your son gas too? The pediatrician prescribed the 40 mg. packs and he suggested that it was slowed gastric motility which he said was a common side effect of all ppi’s. Have you heard of this? Ben is still pooping every day, but he said that it could be slowed enough to still be causing pain.

Inactiveto be honest i have never heard of slow motility being caused by PPI’s. i also have never heard of slow motility causing gas and pain.
my son became very gassy and uncomfortable from mylanta supreme.
was he like this even when he wasnt taking mylanta?December 6, 2006 at 10:31 am #19694Anonymous
InactiveNo, he wasn’t like this at all. The problem I’m having is deciding if it’s the Zegerid or the Mylanta causing the gas because we started the Zegerid one day and the Mylanta the next when he had trouble taking it. So it could be either one. Dr. PHillips said that a switch to the 40 mg. packs used with the Mylanta would cut down on the gas and help improve the flavor of the Zegerid. But if this wasn’t the case for you, I’m beginning to wonder myself. Could you tell me how you use the dissolvable tums? Do you mix them with the Zegerid or just give it before or after? Has it worked well for you?

InactiveAlso, how much of the Tums do you give? My son’s Zegerid amount is 10 mgs. 3xday… Dr. Phillips said to mix the 40 mg. packs just like thje 20 6.5 mls of water and give Ben 2.5-3 mls each dose with the same amount of Mylanta mixed in.

Inactivei got the fruity dissolvables and put it about 3 ML of water into a little plastic cup. i waited about 10 min and sucked up the amount (the whole thing wont dissolve, thats okay because one tablet contains 750mg of calcium carb, more than enough) and i mixed it with the zegerid. he started out on 10 mg 3 times a day. he is now on 16 mg 3 times and you dont need the extra buffer if you are doing a min. of 14 mg per dose.

InactiveOh thank you! I think we’ll start the 40 mg. packs tonight with the Mylanta and if it doesn’t improve soon, I will definitely try the Tums. Did the switch to the Tums help Trace’s gas problems?? I emailed Dr. Phillips about all this and voiced my concern that the Mylanta might be causing the problem. I explained that we were trying the 40 mg. packs. .. all he said to my very long email was “things will get better soon.” I hope he’s right, but I wish he would have answered a few of my questions too! He never mentioned the Tums idea. I know he’s a busy man though. 🙂
