talking

just wondering how much your LO’s are talking. like real words, not babbaling. Shane doesnt say anything that means anything except for dada .. he does understand baba, ball, binky, book, and his cousin’s name. Thats it.

Should he be saying real words by now???

No way! I think he sounds like he’s on the right track! Griffin could hardly say mama and dada by his first birthday!

He’s doesn’t stop talking now! And everyone talks about how clearly he speaks!

One thing I would say is if he has a pacifier, it seems to slow them down (just my opinion) as they have it in their mouth and of course it makes it harder to speak clearly.

He’s only 11 months old, so I wouldn’t expect him to anything other than babble. Sounds like he’s doing what he should, which is experimenting with making sounds with his mouth, babbling, and I believe looking at you if you call his name. Even then, there’s SO much variability in babies. I really wouldn’t worry about it at this point. It sounds on track to me.

I agree. I wouldn’t worry at all. Every child is so completely different – even between siblings. I don’t think Isaac said any words until he was one. Parker was saying big 2 syllable words at 10 or 11 months, and Bryce still hasn’t said a single word. All completely different. It sounds to me like Shane’s doing great!

Sounds great to me!! I think he is right on track! I think life would be so much easier if they COULD talk and tell us what they wanted and what is wrong…but I’m sure in a few years we’ll be wishing they would BE QUIET!

Oh and I’m glad to hear that Shane doesn’t say mama either. Sarah doesn’t call me mama but she sure lights up and SCREAMS ‘DA DA’ when she sees DH! No fair!!

Liza said “Hi” at six months (!) but other than that my three were not saying clear words until a year and only had about a 5 word vocabulary by their first birthday.

Even Eliana who was speaking in five word sentences by 18 months (which is very advanced) was only saying, mama, dada, buh-buh (bubbles) and kee-kee (tickle sound) when I wrote her one year update letter that I send to family.

At a year Myles was saying, “muh-muh” (mamma), “da-ee” (daddy), “hi” and “nummie” (food).

At a year Liza was saying, ma-ma, da-da, hi, fish, ruf-ruf (dog) and Mmmm….Mmmmm when she was hungry.

You’ll be amazed at how many words they pick up between 12 months and 2 years! I wouldn’t be worried about Shane at all. He’s doing just fine.

I just dug out my developmental information given to me by my friend, a developmental therapist.

Here’s what is says for:

9-11 Months
Orients to spoken name
Imitates consonant vowel combinations (ba-ba, boo boo)
Performs on verbal cue alone (clap, wave, stick tongue out, etc…)
Imitates nonspeech sounds (click, cough)
Inhibits activity in response to no
Looks at familiar persons when named

12-15 Months
Uses appropriate intonation patterns in jargon speech
Imitates words inexactly
Uses two words meaningfully (other than mama, dada)
Uses gestures and other movements to communicate
Follows a simple direction
Shows a body part, clothing item, or toy on verbal request.

Shane is doing GREAT!!! No need to worry!!!

Carson will be 2 the end of July. He is just now putting two sylables together. Our specialist said how he was (so behind) with speaking. We had tubes put in and I really dont’ think it helped much. Carson is a rough, rumble, tumble boy. He can jump off the couch. Stand on the kitchen table. Climb the sides of the cupboards by putting his toes in the handles. I think kids work on different skills and then move on to something else. He is almost 2 now and when we went in for the pneumonia thing, she was surprised at how he was holding my face to his and talking to me when we were in the office. He didn’t want to be there and said – mommy, go. Mommy outside. I wouldn’t worry too much about delays in speech. My oldest was quiet and now we can’t get him to BE quiet!
