InactiveHi everyone! My DS is now 12 months old, and still has reflux. He has been through several tests including a bronchoscopy, endoscopy, impedance study, upper gi, and swallow study. We had been controlling his reflux for the most part until the last few weeks – month. He still had the reflux, but it wasn’t quite as noticeable. Well, I recently noticed that the refluxed had worsened quite a bit. Carter was spitting up again, which hadn’t happened in a long time. He also had a lot of wet burps and was terribly fussy. Around the time that this happened, he got hish 12 month vaccines, which included MMR, HIB, Chicken Pox, and Prevnar. Is it possible that these vaccines made his reflux worse?
On top of that, he has a huge purple “eruption cyst” (according to the ped) on his gums where his molar is coming in. Is it possible that teething is also worsening the reflux?
I am just at my wits end with REFLUX!! I had really hoped Carter would have grown out of it by now, and I’m starting to lose hope~~!!! If anyone has any insight on how vaccinations and teething affect reflux, please share!!
Thanks!!

InactiveFrom what I have learned here, both immunizations and teething can cause a reflux flare, so that is probably what you are dealing with. Is he still on meds? If not can you restart until all is clear?

InactiveWe had the same problem at Alana’s 6 month vacs and with teething. Luckily she has now grown out of it and we don’t have any issues. But I would definately put it down to those things. I agree with Beth about meds, if he is still on a PPI I would probably have given some additional zantac to Alana at that time.

InactiveYeah, he is still on 3/4 prevacid solutab twice a day. He is now 23 lbs. So, I am not sure if his dosage needs to be increased, but the GI dr acts like that is already a high dose…Cooper’s mom wrote: From what I have learned here, both immunizations and teething can cause a reflux flare, so that is probably what you are dealing with. InactiveI’m not sure about the vacs, but teething makes Bryce’s reflux horrible. Especially the molars. So I wouldnd’t doubt that it’s the teething causing your sons reflux to flare so much. Good luck, I hope he gets those teeth soon and whatever is causing the flare passes soon.

Inactivei think you have room to increase.. at 20 pounds we were able to go to 30 mg’s a day. if this period of reflux is really bad for him.. i’d might increase it a bit and then you can try lowering it back down when you think he is over the hump.
and i also think both can irritate reflux.. teething DEF. does it.. and vaccinations have been known to do a wide variety of things.. so it dont doubt it could make reflux and or any digestive problems worse.shanesmom2007-09-19 10:31:43

InactiveSame boat here! My son is teething, has a cold, and just got those same 1 yr. nasty shots yesterday! His reflux has definitely picked back up. I know it’s so stinkin frustrating!!! I think I read somewhere that vaccines can increase the acidity of the stomach.
Hope that both of our little guys get better soon!September 19, 2007 at 2:52 pm #42920Anonymous
InactiveWe haven’t seen anything with teething yet (as they just popped through during a really bad virus, so we didn’t even notice the teeth) however, vax’s def flared up Landen’s reflux!!

InactiveI have definitely seen a flare up of reflux after Jackson’s 2 month vaccines. The doctor said that there is no “established correlation” between vaccines and reflux flare ups. Where did you hear that it can cause such a thing? His spit up even smells more acidic. I am frustrated with our doctor because it just seems so obvious.

InactiveMy theory on it is this: When our LO’s get viruses, colds, flus, etc, it messes with their immune systems, which then causes the reflux to flare up. (I think it also flares up because of all of the mucous.) Well, when they get vaccinations, this also messes with their immune systems (ie. causes fevers, etc). I think the reflux flare-ups related to vaccinations have something to do with their little immune systems going down. For example, when Carter got the chicken pox vaccine, he seemed generally ill that whole week. His reflux was TERRIBLE, and of course, the chicken pox vaccine put a live virus in his body. So, of course his immune system was affected. That is my theory on it. Reflux and the immune system are somehow related. This is just my opinion based off of various things I have read and my experiences with Carter’s reflux.

Inactiveyes, Vaccine make reflux worse beacuse it increase the amount of Hydrocloride acid in the stomach and put your inmune system on high alert. Vaccines have not been very kind on Kendra’s gut or inmune system, but every baby is different.
I have read here that teething makes reflux worse, but Kendra still have no teeth, so i can speak from expereince.I hope this passes soon.HugsLeo -
