InactiveHi All,
We’ve assumed my daughter was MSPI since about 1 month, when she went on the Nutramigen. Then at about 3 months the Pedi GI put her on Neocate b/c she said that mucus in the spit up meant she was allergic to the Nutramigen. Well, she’s now 4 1/2 months, and from what I can tell, her spit up is still “mucusy”. I’m not sure it’s really mucus, or if it’s saliva, as she started drooling a lot more around 3 months too. I brought a dirty diaper with us to the Pedi GI (at the 3 month appointment), they tested it for blood, which it did not have, which is 1 indicator of the MSPI. The dr said, however, that that did not mean she wasn’t MSPI, it just wasn’t presenting itself in that way. They keep telling me there’s no real test for MSPI, as it can present itself in many ways. Is there any other test that may tell us better? I really don’t think she needs to be on the Neocate, I think she was just still having symptoms of the Acid reflux because she wasn’t on a high enough Prevacid dose. Now that she’s on the higher prevacid dose, 1 part of me would like to try her back on the Nutramigen, but another part of me is scared to do that, that she may become worse again.
We weren’t that thrilled with the initial Pedi GI, but we have an appointment with her on 15 Feb. I made an appointment with a different dr, which isn’t until 5 March. I’m still trying to figure out who to see, any input would be appreciated!! (The Pedi GI would only go up to 22.5 mg prevacid/day, it was our pediatrician who pushed her up to the 30mg, so going to the original pedi gi means we’d have to tell her we went around her to up the dosage, which i’m afraid will jeopardize any cooperation from her here out. If we go to the new doc, we can just say what she’s on now & see what they suggest fromn here out…)

Inactivemy son never ever had blood and is severely MSPI. blood is a big indiciator of allergy, not MSPI.
MSPI is diagnosed by symptoms. my son was in a lot of pain on all the formulas even though he was on a high PPI dose. when they are MSPI and on a milk or soy based formula the proteins actually damage the GI tract-causing pain and reflux flair ups.
i read this article that made me realize he needed neocate:https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6013&a mp;KW=misconceptions

InactiveThanks for the article, I think I may have read part of it before, but wasn’t sure where i saw it. So it could take 2-3 months for her little belly to fix itself, yikes! She’s happier now on the higher prevacid and neocate, so I guess I won’t rock the boat for a while!

InactiveHmmm…..so many, many things to consider! That’s what makes this reflux thing so complicated and stressful.

How long has she been on the higher dose of Prevacid? I think if I were you I’d wait until she’s been on the high dose at least a month and if she seems to be absolutely fine, then I might trial another formula to see if she could do without Neocate. I’d first try Alimentum or maybe Good Start. I’d do it very slowly….like two ounces a day for a good two weeks (because it can take two weeks for milk proteins to build up enough to cause problems), and then if she seems fine after the initial two weeks, I’d gradually increase it from there. **I have to preface this advice with the fact that my children were not MSPI so I don’t have any first hand experience…just what I’ve read and learned here.
As for the Ped GI’s, personally I wouldn’t worry too much about the ped gi getting upset about the increase in dose. You can always tell her that during a regular ped appt or phone call for your daughter the topic of reflux and meds came up and the ped increased her dose due to her continuing symptoms. I guess if I was really dissatisfied with the first ped GI, I’d wait and see the other one, but if it was just the increased dose issue, I’d see someone I’m familiar with rather than start with someone else since that would just be a big unknown. Just use your mommy’s intution and do what feels right to you.

Good luck with everything. I hope she does well on the 30 mg of Prevacid. That’s what turned everything around for Myles.
