Sorry it has taken me so long to update- we did get Seth’s results back and the ph study showed he had mild reflux and the biopsies came back showing he had mild esophagitis in his lower esophagus.
They said his kind of esophagitis was caused by reflux not allergies since there were no eosinophils present. We are to continue with the Prevacid but did not think we need to do anything else for now.So, overall good news I guess!March 22, 2010 at 7:08 pm #66086AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear that he’s still having problems with the reflux. If they don’t think it’s allergies, do they think that he needs more or a different med (since he still has esophagitis on 30mg of prevacid)?
March 23, 2010 at 9:54 am #66088AnonymousInactiveHi Lori,
I wondered the same thing. They (nurse) said to just continue with the Prevacid for now. She did mention that we might could add Zantac at bedtime to help if he started having night flare ups again.
Do you think I should push for a higher dose of Prevacid ?
Oh, editing to add that I was surprised they said *mild* reflux giving he does have esophagitis on the 30 mg. of Prevacid. I am wondering if the study is reliable since we could only feed at certain intervals and therefore we were not following our usual eating patterns??
Also, although I am so thankful that there were not any allergies found, I would have almost betted he did have them so I still suspect food intolerances.
At any rate, he does seem to be improving albeit slowly so maybe he will eventually get over this and/or get to a point where it is manageable.

I don’t know how they grade the probe results, based on reflux episodes and PH, I think, maybe kevieb can tell you some more about it. About allergies, I’m pretty sure that you can still have them without eosinophils. I thought that eosinophils just means that it’s possible eosinophilic esophagitis. You can have food allergies without EE. You may want to get a referral to an allergist to see if he had any food allergies. Just another thought… not sure if you’re happy with your GI? Do you need another opinion?
March 23, 2010 at 6:40 pm #66092AnonymousInactiveSo sorry to hear this Tiffany. But at least you got some answers. I think Nexium might be a good option… it was the only thing that really helped my mom for a LONG time with her reflux.
March 24, 2010 at 9:46 am #66094AnonymousInactiveInteresting about the allergies- I specifically asked the nurse if we needed to go for allergy testing and she said no.. might be something we need to look into again.
We go for a follow up in a few weeks so I will talk to the GI about another PPI.As far as the GI goes, we go to the leading practice in our area (maybe only one??) they have multiple locations all over the state but it is the same practice and our GI is the head of the group so I don’t know if we would get any differing opinions or not KWIM? I have always been pleased with him – I think it is more of the nurse who may be confused! So, I am going to wait and talk to him some more when we go back. Thanks ladies!Mom2Seth2010-03-24 09:52:13
March 24, 2010 at 5:26 pm #66095AnonymousInactiveTiffany, it may be ME who’s confused!!! Ask some of the moms who have kids with allergies. I know that they don’t all have eosinophilic esophagitis.
