The Amby arrived yesterday. I was just about finished assembling it when my son woke up crying from his short nap. I tried to feed and hold him, but he just kept crying. I quickly finished putting the Amby together, and put my son inside. I started bouncing it up and down, and within two or three minutes he was fast asleep. I was so excited! I couldn’t wait to see how it helped him (and I) sleep at night…
I fed him, swaddled him, and plopped him in the Amby at around 8 p.m. He was up and crying by 10 p.m. (no longer than a normal night nap/sleeping). He was not interested in sleeping in the Amby. I tried to put him in at 5 a.m. It took him a long time to fall asleep, even with the bouncing, and he was up about 45 minutes later.
The rocking/bouncing motion does seem to help him fall asleep during the day. It does not, however, help him take longer naps. So much for sleeping at night. Hey, it was worth a try (but not worth all that money).

The bouncing and rocking motion really seems to work. Even if he cries in the beginning, if I continue to bounce him up and down for a few minutes, he usually relaxes and drifts off. It’s also nice because you can move the Amby around the house.

January 27, 2009 at 12:54 pm #60610AnonymousInactiveDid you start using the Amby as soon as your son was born? How long did it take Luke and Justice to get over their reflux? Congrats on your pregnancy! Let’s hope for no reflux. 🙂
January 27, 2009 at 4:12 pm #60615AnonymousInactiveI did not start using it right away. Justice was 5 months when we started using the amby. Both Luke and Justice were over their reflux at 9 months. Justice will still have reflux if he has too much dairy. By too much I mean he rarely ever gets any dairy, but every now and then we will let him have one cookie that says it has some milk in it and he does okay. If you let him have anymore than though you can see his reaction.
Thank you. We are very much hopeing for no reflux. We have never had the experience of having a “normal” baby and I’m really hopeing this is our chance.March 27, 2009 at 12:01 pm #61844AnonymousInactiveWe’ve had an Amby for our son since he was about two months old (he’s now 7 months old). He’s never liked sleeping in it at night. For whatever reason, we didn’t really start using it for naps until he was about 3 months old but it made a HUGE difference in being able to get him back to sleep. He’s one of those half-hour nappers on the the nose! It’s like a little alarm bell goes off exactly at the 30 minute mark and he wakes up. Without the Amby, we just couldn’t get him to fall back asleep but now what we do is I creep into his room after he’s been asleep for 25 minutes, wait for him to stir at 30 minutes and immediately start rocking and “shooshing” him back to sleep. Initially, this could take up to 10 minutes to get him back to sleep but now, it only takes one or two and sometimes he’s even started sleeping for an hour and a half straight through! Such a relief for all of us! You’ll figure out how it works best for your family, but I do think they are affective at getting the little ones back to sleep with the least amount of stimulation.lucasmama2009-03-27 12:02:57
March 30, 2009 at 1:20 am #61892AnonymousInactiveThat’s great that you have been able to get your son to sleep longer if rock him before he wakes up. Blake has been sleeping in the Amby since January. He takes all of his naps there, and spends the first portion of his night in it, too. He is less likely to wake up (startle himself) if he is sleeping in the Amby. He goes to sleep around 8 p.m. and wakes up anytime between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. Last night he actually slept until 4 a.m. and I hope the pattern continues. From that point on, he sleeps in the bed with me and nurses several times until we wake up in the morning. I can’t wait until he actually sleeps through the night. It’s been six months since I’ve gotten a good night’s sleep. It definitely takes longer to get him to fall asleep in the Amby these days. I have to bounce him forever until he finally drifts off (sometimes 30 minutes), but he does seem to like sleeping in there. Sometimes I worry if all that bouncing up and down is good/okay for him. Also, I was surprised at how easily the mesh part of the Amby tore/ripped. Still, the Amby has been invaluable in getting Blake to sleep more easily. I used to put him in his bouncer seat and actually walk around the house bouncing him up and down. Or, I would nurse him in our bed and then try to sneak out as quietly as possible once he fell asleep. I don’t have to worry about that anymore. Now I just nurse him and then transfer him directly to the Amby. 🙂
March 30, 2009 at 12:30 pm #61897AnonymousInactiveWell… so I had to go and jinx myself! Our little guy is now so active that yesterday, I heard him kind of call out at the 30 minute mark after putting him down for his nap. But he didn’t start crying so I thought maybe he had even put himself back to sleep (something he’s been doing more and more). I almost didn’t even go in and check on him but for some reason, decided to peek in and there he was, dangling out of the Amby – his head only a couple inches from the floor! I suppose he had woken up, sat up, and that motion caused the hammock to swing back and launched him forward. Luckily, that little front flap caught him at the shoulders, but his head was all the way out and the weight of his body caused the Amby to rock back and therefore he was only a couple inches from hitting the ground!
I know the company tells you once they start sitting up it’s not that safe to keep them in there unattended. But he’s been able to sit up for a while now and never really tried to so I guess we thought he wouldn’t. But we were wrong!
So now we’re not sure what to do! But I agree with you that the mesh rips really easily. And the zipper on the front flap of ours is also coming un-stitched. It certainly doesn’t seem like something that would last through lots of babies, but then, maybe we’re just extra hard on ours!
Anyhow… it actually sounds like Blake is sleeping pretty well! Luca sleeps from 7:30 to 11, eats, goes back to sleep until 1, wakes up briefly, sleeps until 2:00, eats again, but then is in and out of sleep starting from 5 until 7. It’s hard since he’s so mobile, he ends up upside down on the incline of his crib. Until he was 4 months, I used to bring him in our bed starting abut 4 a.m., but now if I do that, he thinks it’s play time!
Oh well… all I can hope for is that by the time he’s 1- I won’t be feeding him at night anymore and hopefully that will help with some of the wake-ups! lucasmama2009-03-30 12:31:30
