InactiveI asked my GI doc about thickening with something besides cereal and he said there’s nothing really good. Not sure what that means…
I will look into a second opinion…think I’ll wait until after her endoscopy though because he may see something and increase her meds at that point which would make this all moot.

InactiveI would try sleeping her in her car seat. My twins can’t sleep at all lying down. We had the sleep wedges but they still were waking up in pain all night. Than one night my son fell asleep in his carseat, I didn’t want to wake him, so i let him sleep. He slept all night! Since than I put 2 carseats in the crib and they sleep. Their throwing up is getting a little better, so now we are having them sleep in bouncy seat since it isn’t as upright. Connor has also taken 2 naps on his back. So I’m slowly weaning them back to back sleeping.

InactiveBe careful with the car seat though – it makes the reflux worse for
some (especially those scrunched up infant seats). The Baby Papasan is
a good bouncer/infant seat that is on a good incline and quite cushy.
Have you tried tummy sleeping?May 24, 2006 at 11:22 am #8559Anonymous
InactiveElla’s not a fan of being on her tummy yet….she gets ticked off pretty quickly. We got an ambybed yesterday so i’m going to see if she does better in there at night and especially during naps.

InactiveThanks — i think the wedge is what I’ll eventually get. Right now I have something that is a cross between those two…an inclined sleep positioner.

Inactiveknb18 wrote: Again if I were you I’d get a second opinion. Is she spitting a lot? If not, oatmeal likely won’t help and might only make her more gassy if her system is not ready for it. I’m sure one of us can help you find someone else.
She may take a few days to adjust to no swaddle but might sleep better and start finding her thumb to suck soon – worth keeping up with IMHO.
Actually, oatmeal helps a TON with babies who have silent reflux yet don’t spitup..spitters or not, the oatmeal or whatever cereal thickens the formula enough for it to stay in t heir tummies better (my son has been on thickened bottles since a month old)

InactiveMy concern is the gassiness from the cereal though…the rice cereal really bothers her…not sure if oatmeal would be different/better/worse. My GI said that it could make her stool looser…that’s fine, as long as she doesn’t have excessive gas. Has anyone found oatmeal to be very gas-producing?

InactiveAny grains can be hard on the tummy/cause gas, etc. And while oatmeal
helps some silent refluxers, it makes things worse for others – in our
case, until her digestive system was ready, the grains were too hard
for her to digest, making her constipated and gassy plus she still
refluxed as much. It’s all trial and error really – but I wouldn’t
focus on thickening until you get the endoscopy and med issue fixed.May 25, 2006 at 9:56 am #8609Anonymous
InactiveAidan did horrible on rice cereal, constipated and gassy which went away as soon as I switched it to oatmeal. His ped GI recomended the switch..she doesn’t suggest any invasive tests unless the thickining does not help or makes things worse..but like Karen said it’s trial and error. oh and Aidan slept on a 30 degree wedge called an AR pillow until just recently. Inactivehi – my son also had horrible gas – the acid situation seemed under control then he stuggled with gas that could be described none other than “explosive”. at the time he was taking Axid (another form of zantac) and prevacid. his gi said the gas was most likely the combination of the axid and prevacid and to see if he could do without the axid. at about the same time we began to add a tsp of rice cereal (organic – gerber has milk and soy in it)per ounce of fomula (gi said it could go as high as a tblsp. per ounce) to his diet. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!! immediate transformation. he continues to have gas but it is NORMAL gas not the kind that seems to want to tear off his bottom. i would talk to your doc. about adding cereal to his bottles. i hope this helps!
