InactiveFirst off let me say I know I am lucky in many ways. Either my DD has a high pain tolerance or she is not usually in pain. When she outgrows her Zantac dose, we have an issue. But otherwise she is a very happy baby. So maybe this is a selfish concern, I don’t know. It’s the SPIT UP! It’s getting worse and worse. She spits up over 50 times a day, and up to 3-4 hours after a meal. It just seems to go on and on. She projectiles at times, but mostly it is just spit up. It does makes her uncomfortable at times, maybe she feels the acid at those times regardless of the Zantac, so she will whine a little after she spits up. But not usually cry.
Our pedi says that she is gaining weight well and her pain is being managed, and she is not concerend over the spit up. She constantly reminds me that we are not treating the spit up. But I SO wish there were a way to treat both. This simply CAN’T be normal. The rice cereal dose help some, but she doesn’t want us putting any more than 1 tbsp per 4 ounce bottle. I don’t know if that’s the problem?
Isn’t strange that in this day and age there isn’t an answer to this? Has your baby’s spit up been helped by anything???

InactiveHas she been tested for DGE? Babies with DGE can sometimes be helped with motility drugs. My son had mild DGE. He spit up a lot, but not as much as your little girl. Our doc says she prefers not to treat DGE unless it is severe enough to cause issues with weight gain, because the meds have side effects, especially the most common one which is Reglan. It’s something you can talk to your baby’s doctor about though.
As for the thickening, my doc suggests 1 tbs for every two ounces, but honestly, Myles threw up just as much when his feedings were thickened as when they weren’t…so I just stopped thickening most of his feeds.
As long as she’s not in any pain, and the Zantac is working for her, I think you’re probably doing all you can.

InactiveOh, I forgot to add that Myles had one of his worst times at 4 months of age. Several moms here have said that reflux often peaks at 4 months.

InactiveHi and welcome!!
Abby started on Alimentum at 4 months of age and our doc recommended thickening 1 tsp per 1 ounce. She is still on that and doing very well. Each of these little ones is so different. What works great for one may not work at all for another. WHERE IS THE INSTRUCTION BOOK!!!!
Hope you can find the answers you need!!

InactiveHi and welcome,
My son has had the same problem. His pain has always been easily controlled with medicine, but he would spit up HUGE amounts all the time. He was diagnosed with DGE and put on Erythromycin. Once he was on a high enough dose, the spitting up reduced dramatically. He went from spitting up 3-4 oz. 6 times a day to spitting up maybe 1 oz. 2 times a day.It might be worth mentioning it to your doctor. Our son didn’t have weight gain problems initially, but eventually it got so bad that he was not gaining at all.
Good luck finding some answers. I know how absolutely frustrating the spitting up can be.

InactiveThanks girls! I have asked our doctor about it. But her theory is that as long as the pain is managed and she is gaining weight, there is no need to go any further. I guess in ways I agree with her, but at times I just want something to give. I too have heard that at 4 months the problem can come to a peak, I just hope it’s all getting better from here. Thanks again!
