InactiveWe had our follow-up with our GI the other day. I asked about Simply Thick, and she said that’s used for kids with swallowing problems, so we wouldn’t use it. Don’t some of you on the board use it instead of rice cereal just for thickening/reflux purposes? Are there any calories in it? I hate how much rice cereal we’re giving him, and don’t want to pump him full of unneeded calories. Are there any side effects/downsides of using the Simply Thick? Where do you get it and how does it work?
Thanks!December 4, 2009 at 11:17 pm #64933Anonymous
InactiveDenise,
I only know so much about simply thick b/c of my work but it is typically used for swallowing problems but it would still help “hold” the formula down if used for that purpose alone. I don’t believe it has calories, if it does, they are very few. I don’t think there personally are any side effects/downsides. It is a great product, you can do a google search and learn all about it, but basically it is a gel that comes in premeasured packets, you would probably want nectar thickness and you thicken by vigorous shaking or mixing well with a FORK ( this breaks up the gel so it can thicken) and it will thicken to the right consistency and not go any further, so technically you can thicken multiple bottles at once and store them for the future. I know this first hand b/c I had to do “experiments” with the product for work when we were thinking about adding it to our formulary. I literally would mix it at 3pm in the afternoon, leave it on my desk and then test it out the next morning at 7am when I got back and it was the same consistency.. most things don’t work like that. You will most likely have to ask your pharmacy to order it for you, but I am pretty sure the website will give you information about ordering. HTH.

InactiveThanks, Beth! Harrison’s actually gotten worse again, he’s having a really rough day. Terrible diaper rash, loose stool, arching/crunching all day except at the first bottle. I talked to the GI this afternoon, and she suggested it could be the rice cereal now–which really upsets me–and to use oatmeal. I’m thinking now maybe I’ll try using Simply Thick and take out any the cereal factor

InactiveDenise if it were me that is what I would do. That way you are taking any “food” out of the equation so you know what you are working with. Good Luck, this is so hard.
