tips on giving prevacid?

any tips on giving a 3 week old prevacid? doc prescribed the 15mg packets once a day. said to mix it in with her morning bottle (she’s on formula) but it makes it so thick she can’t suck it through the nipple. we’ve even tried using larger nipples (#2) with no luck. i know we can mix it with 2oz water but i’m afraid giving it to her like that will fill her up and she won’t take her bottle. (she eats 3oz every 3 hrs -6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm etc etc)

well i am pretty sure that you cant mix it in their formula but i might be wrong.. and i think the packets are pretty hard.. do you have the option to get it in a suspension form for her?

Laura’s intro link (stickied) in the Introduce Yourself Forum has lots of information regarding Prevacid….scroll down to Prevacid 101. There is a lot of other valuable information there too about Reflux which may be helpful.

I used the solutabs so I don’t have any experience with the packets, but one suggestion I can think of for now is to use a bottle nipple. You can make the hole bigger or buy a Y-cut nipple (these are made for cereal). Put the nipple in her mouth and squirt the medicine in with a syringe while she’s sucking on it. Or they make something called a medicine pacifier.

I’m sure some of the moms who’ve used the packets will be much more helpful.

Prevacid should be given on an empty stomach (at least two hours after last feeding) and then followed up 30 minutes later with a meal….so it really should not be given in her bottle with her feeding.
