Lucas has been having a great week. Sleeping better, etc. etc. (I’ve removed wheat and it seems to have helped.) Last night he must have wakened 25 times. He just could not get comfortable and could only sleep arched over my body or with my arm underneath his back. Lots of burping, etc. Didn’t seem to be actively teething, which is weird. Anyway, today he woke with hiccups and continued to seem like he was having a hard time. He coughed a few times looking like he was refluxing something up and looked like he might gag, but he didn’t. Then I was feeding him breakfast in the high chair and he did the same thing, coughing like it’s reflux, then gagging and suddenly he’s bringing up his entire breakfast. None of it was digested, not even partially. He had been eating for at least 30 minutes if not more, he’s a very slow eater. after doing this, I cleaned him up and five minutes later he was eating again–acting fine. 2.5 hours later he did the same thing, only it was after a nap and mostly breastmilk came up, but then a bite of egg and sausage from 2.5 hours earlier came up, completely undigested. EAch time these coughing/gagging episodes happened, he cried hard afterwards, as if it was painful.
Do any of you have problems where your toddler is refluxing during or after a meal and bringing up a lot of food? An adult friend of mine with pretty severe reflux said this is par for the course for her, and often happens in the middle of a meal. Only she feels something is lodged and then has to excuse herself and goes to throw up in private. Is this what toddler reflux and children’s reflux becomes? This is really the first time that there’s been this kind of hting with a lot of food coming up that’s undigested. He doesn’t seem to have the flu and acted as if he felt well other times of the day today. I don’t have any experience with kids iwth the flu either, so I don’t really know what their vomit looks like, but I am guessing it looks digested, like when I have the flu. I just know he had all the signs of lots of reflux going on last night and today too. I’m guessing that logically the hiatal hernia might make it so that some food stays in the top part of his stomach, where there might not be a lot of digestion going on, but don’t really know. 2.5 hours seems a long time for something to come up looking EXACTLY like it did before going down.
any thoughts?

When she had the flu she threw up everything in her stomach and a lot of it was undigested or partially digested. She’s had 3 different stomach viruses. With two of them, she refused to eat after she started throwing up, but one of them was really strange. Once she threw up she seemed to feel better and she would want to eat again right away. However, she was running a fever and acting funky in other ways, so you could definitely tell that something was wrong.

Thanks for the info on Kaelyn. Today he has had diarrhea-like stools two times and woke feeling yucky and acting weird. Now I’m just wondering if he’s got a little stomach bug. I’m glad to know that sometimes Kaelyn’s vomit was undigested ….it sounds horrible to say it that way, but I just didn’t know if it would look like that from just being sick– he’s never had the stomach flu or a virus like this before.. I gave him tylenol and it seemed to help — he perked up within about 30 minutes. I’m now giving him basically food off the BRAT diet. Your message made me feel so much better, though.
