InactiveKnowing that you have to add buffer to the Zegerid when you use the 40 mg. packets, we have added Mylanta to his first dose and have used the dissolvable Tums for the other two doses because too much Mylanta gave Ben diarrhea and cramping. However, I am just now realizing that I might be giving him too much of the Tums. I have been dissolving a whole tablet and am thinking that maybe it should only be 1/2 of one? Does anyone else use the Tums and know what it should be??? Is it even possible to give them too much of the Tums? And if I am giving too much could that actually hinder the effectiveness of the Zegerid?

InactiveI have to go soon to ge Liza from school so I don’t have time to search but there was a recent thread (yesterday or the day before) about Pepcid Complete and some info in there about how much is ok. I think it might help.

InactiveIt was actually reading that thread that made me start to wonder about it. I just don’t know since the Tums is mixed with the Zegerid and not given alone, like the Pepcid.

Inactivei was dissolving tums in like a teaspoon of water. i only gave about enough of the tums to equal a minimum of 3.5 ML total volume per dose of zegerid. this was DR Phillips instructions.
one tums tablet contains 750 mg of calcium carbonate. if you are giving that three times a day, that does seem like a lot to me. but i am not a doctor so i am not for sure on this…have you asked dr phillips?

InactiveI just emailed him. Hopefully, he will get back to me soon. See the whole buffer thing is so confusing to me. One time he said I didn’t need it anymore because Ben’s dose is 4 mls and the other time he said I did because it wasn’t up to 7 mls. He said it had to be at least 3.5 mls for the 20 mg. packs and 7 mls for the 40 mg. packs before you can go without the buffer. But I know he has told me different info. at other times.
Anyway, all that to say, hopefully he will get back to me soon!

7 mls if you are making a 2mg/ml concentration. i was making a 4mg/ml concentration so my minimum buffer amount was 3.5 ML.

InactiveThat’s the concentration we use too, but he still said to add the buffer.
I got a reply from him, and he said that 1/2 a tablet was fine and that 1 tablet was not too much.
