Two for one: Sucky daycare AND rolling over

Ok, so first things first-let me B*tch. So today I go to pick up the Blueberry from daycare, and the random women that they have in there ask me yet again if I am reeeaaaally sure that I want her eating every two to three hours. Hmmm-let me see-she’s only put on a pound in a month, she’s a mostly breastfed baby, and if I don’t tell you to feed her every 2-3 hours, you only give her a bottle when she screams-which she never does. YES YOU MORONS-EVERY TWO TO THREE HOURS! Ok-so I couldn’t say that to them, thanks for letting me “pretend”…anywhoo-so we address that again, and then I notice that they have her sleep swaddler wrapped around her middle. I’m thinking-ok, they can’t figure out how to use this rig, so maybe I just don’t bring it anymore. So, I ask-hey, do you want me to skip the swaddler. To which they answer no, that they keep her wrapped in it all d*mn day-even when she is awake, and they let her arms out when it looks like she is really struggling. WHAT? I told these two-what on earth makes you think we want that?!!! The swaddler is ONLY for sleep and ONLY in her play yard (that’s where they sleep) if she needs it. We never, ever indicated that she was to be swaddled all the time! Seriously-what place worth it’s salt would ever think that was a good idea-why on earth has no one asked me about this like they have over and over with the feeding?? This stupid place came sooo highly recommended to us and we had to fight to get in. And now these nimrods are telling me that it’s inconvenient to feed and play with my kid! The director was already gone for the day, but I left a very polite message for her asking her to call me back and “coach” me on how to communicate with her staff so that my child will actually be fed and have interactions-not hang out doing an impression of a mummy.

And to be fair-we know that this isn’t the place for us. We have bitten the bullet and hired a nanny, which means hello huge expense, good bye brand name pop-tarts. Oh well-we feel blessed that we can find the cash to buy her the best possible care-even though we both wish that we could afford to be a one income family. Anywhoo-that’s another rant. So the Nanny starts at the end of next week anyway, but I cannot resist the opportunity to rip someone a new you know what over this. I cannot help but think that if they were able to hire and retain staff that would actually stick-then these people would get to know my kid, and me, and feel comfortable saying “what the heck is with the swaddler?” I am so sick and tired of walking into that room and having to say “who are you. I do not know you.”

Ok-so I’ve ranted….thanks! Now I have a question. So, I know that I am the ONLY mom who has ever been convinced that my kid is developmentally stunted, but I’m starting to be dismayed that she’s not rolling over, trying to sit up, speak french, anything! She is a little over 4 mths and one of the anklebiters in her class at 5 months is already standing up! Show off… So, what did you ladies do to encourage that development, especially when tummy time was such an issue until we got the ‘flux under control?

Oh Shellie!! You give them a piece of your mind when you talk to the director. That is absolutely unexceptable. Now on to the rolling. part of the problem could be that poor thing has been swaddled all day at daycare!! You know with Cooper he went back to belly first and then worked his way to belly to back and then just rolled all over the place. Now I have 2 friends babies are 11 days apart. Both girls, no reflux issues at all. At about 8 months… one was rolling and not crawling or sitting and the other was crawling, not sitting or rolling. Now the younger of the 2 is walking pretty well with someone’s hands and the older of the 2 is just starting to cruise. They will be 1 the end of the month and beginning of next month. I hope that helps. Cooper was very early with all that stuff despite his reflux but he is a busy body just like his momma so I wasn’t surprised. I bet she will flourish once you have the nanny giving her some good undivided attention. Another thing our neighbor who is 4 wks older than Cooper didn’t walk until he was almost 18 months old where as Cooper was walking at about 11 months. I just think all babies are different.

Oh Hon!! I am sorry you have to deal with that from her daycare!!!! I’ve dealt with it before and know how you feel!!!! And My goodness, that makes me so upset for you about the swaddling blanket! WTH are they thinking leaving her like that all day? It can be challenging finding a good place. There are MANY good ones out there, you just run into a few places that hire inexperienced people or places that have high turnover of employees and it sucks for your kids to get caught up in that mix. And LMAO about Blueberry practicing to look like a mummy! *snort* I am sorry, that made me laugh!

And I am with Kristin, we gave up on many name brand things a long time ago. *sigh* I hope you like the new flavors of your store brand pop-tarts sweetie. HUGS

Shellie– that is flipping crazy! I would freak out too…. I’m so glad you are able to get a nanny! Blueberry is lucky to have such an amazingly funny mom.
Now…Finn is only 2 days older than Bberry. He only rolls from back to tummy and not very often. I also think that all babies are different…and I attributed the slow roll to the reflux as well–just hasn’t had much horizontal time. He loves to stand and lock his knees (with me holding) …He looks like a ‘mini-me’ of my husband!LOL
My friend has a 7 month old that doesn’t sit, crawl or show much interest in rolling…
Finn also only gained 1 pound in the last month… I’m constantly worried about it.
I hope you do let that director know how awful his/her place is–
horrifying!

Both my kids were over 5 months before rolling even one direction. 8mo before crawling, but were both walking soon after 12 mo. Each child is different, but for heaven sakes get out of the swaddler and she might be able to move.

I have the best daycare I could ask for as far as all we’ve been through. They should follow what you want without asking questions. If you want them to stand on their head and say a chant before feedings, they should do it. That’s my opinion. You’re the mom, and I WOULD definately make known that this is why you are leaving!

Hi Shellie,

First, Love the sense of humor! We have had to have that to get through a lot of this, so that will fair you well!

I, too, would be changing daycares. Some are great, and some are not. I think it is great you can do the nanny thing. Personally, when she is bigger, I would consider the daycare environment again when she is like 2 or so as I have found that the socialization and life skills the kids learn there are so great! We have done both, the nanny thing and the daycare, and it really just depends on the people. You can hear great things about a daycare, but if the person in the room sucks, then it is bad. Our nannies, were pretty good out of the gate, but then as time went on they fizzled out and the kids were not stimulated enough. At the moment, Dylan is in Kindergarten (half day and home with me half day) and Carter is in a full time center with great teachers. He is much more verbal and he can clean up his own plate after dinner and put it in the sink (a foreign idea to Dylan) so they are really good for Carter at the daycare.

Rolling over, well, I don’t want to compare as mine were both much older, but had different issues, but I have seen my friends’ babies do things on their own schedules and as long as she is trying and engaged in what is going on around her, so be it. The docs will tell you when to worry, so ignore those overacheivers in her room! They end up being “yes men” and never have a mind of their own.

Thanks to all of you!

The day that I wrote this, the kiddo made a liar out of me and rolled over on her own from her tummy to her back. Since then I won’t say that she has done it a ton of times, but she has a handful-and has also added the habit of blowing bubbles at me when I start talking to her about it. Don’t quote me on this, but I think she’s telling me to MYOB and she’ll roll when she’s darn good and ready. 🙂

Yeah-the daycare-yesterday was her last day and it felt like a HUGE weight was off my shoulders when I picked her up. I had talked to the Director earlier in the week about my concerns, and while she did not even know why I was calling when I called, she told me that none of my concerns were true without even offering to talk to the teachers. Seriously? I’m thinking that is the explanation of everything that ails us in that daycare-it starts at the top. When I picked up the Berry on Friday, I put her in her carrier in the little hall outside of the infant room where all of the toddlers were playing, looked up and realized that I had been left alone in the hall with about 7 toddlers. Funny thing is that they realized it at the same moment and all started coming towards me looking like little zombies out for brains. Ok-maybe I’m exaggerating a bit-but seriously, the zoned out little faces realizing that here is fresh meat-it was weird! I waited until the teacher decided to do her job instead of me (couple of minutes) and then left. I really do like the regular teachers that she has in her room, but they only work a few hours a day-the rest of the time, it’s random fill in teachers and come to find out-some are still in HS. I just checked their latest rating on the state’s website, and apparently they have not been doing background checks! Not for us at all! They are clearly spending their revenue stream on making the center look gorgeous, not on getting the quantity and quality of teachers that they need.

Ok-I’m going to stop grumbling about stuff that I don’t have to worry about anyway and go make some cookies. smooches ladies!
