I appologize for how gross this topic is, but it is important I know. I have noticed apparently undigested food in my son’s stools, such as carrots and apples. Does that mean he has not gotten any nutritive value or calories out of the food? He is failure to thrive so I want to maximize his eating and only give him foods that will be absorbed. Thanks.
Hi Emmy ~ We discussed this issue with the Ped GI a couple of months ago. My dd has had loose, frequent stools with undigested food in them since she was a year old. The undigested food is generally things like apples, peas and corn. The Ped GI said this is normal and it is due to an immature digestive system. I think it’s pretty normal for most toddlers and gets better as they get older. I didn’t consider them not absorbing the nutrients, so I didn’t ask about that. I don’t think it’s a reason to stop giving them but I see what you are saying, it’s hard to imagine them getting any calories or nutrients from the foods if they are passing right through. Are you already adding margarine and/or oil to all of his foods?
My son who is almost 20 months has the same issue with peas, carrots, corn, and some fruits. They are broken down, but still visible in his BM’s. I would assume he is not getting much for calories or nutrition from them and therefore I don’t really count on them for any value at this point. I have heard the same as Stacey that it is the result of an immature digestion system. He loves these foods, so I don’t discourage him from eating them!
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. My dd was actually not completely digesting food that is normally digested but we found out from her ped GI & her feeding therapist that because she wasn’t chewing properly & was swallowing her food in chuncks, she wasn’t getting all her nutrients from her food. We did a diet history for her (not the best day & not the worst) & her nutritionist stated that she was getting the proper amt of calories, etc but she only gained 1 lb in a 6 month period & then didn’t gain even 1 oz on a 6 week period. She is now learning to chew properly & she is eating better & slowly gaining & her poops look much better than before.
