Anyone else out there vaccine-phobic? Amelia is due for her MMR… UGH! I just read about a case that was ruled that vaccines did indeed “aggravate” an underlying condition in a little girl causing her autism. I really don’t know what to do. I am very worried about this vaccine in particular. Anyone have any suggestions?
March 25, 2008 at 11:11 am #49315AnonymousInactiveThat’s a big topic. You will definately hear both sides. And yes, there was a case in the US just recently where the court ruled that her vaccinations did contribute to her developing autism.
We’re are going through some very difficult times with our son right now, and I strongly believe that his vaccinations affected him negatively. His immune system is in shambles and we are fighting to keep from losing him to an autistic spectrum disorder. Now I’m not anti-vaccine, but I feel we are doing too much, too fast in tiny little bodies that don’t have a fully functioning immune system. I think we need safer vaccines, and a safer vaccination schedule. Now with that being said, many children do just fine on our aggresive vaccination schedule, but unfortunately some don’t. I opted to postpone giving Paige her MMR since this one can be especially tough on some babies. We may give it at a later date, or we may not. If we decide to, we will definately have it split up into individual vaccinations of measles, mumps and rubella given at different times and at a much older age.March 25, 2008 at 11:32 am #49320AnonymousInactiveDefinitely a hot topic on this site. If you do a search, I’m sure that you’ll be able to find opinions on both sides (assuming the threads still exist… they typically get heated with the threads being shut down).
March 25, 2008 at 12:24 pm #49321AnonymousInactiveVaccine phobe here! Although we have gotten all of them without incident (12 mos) My ped will discharge us if we are not up to date but he did agree to let us wait until she is 2 years old for her MMR. This makes me very happy to get through the 15-18 month window. It’s worth asking your doc if you can at least wait until then.
March 25, 2008 at 12:29 pm #49322AnonymousInactiveBTW, did you see NBC nightly news last night? Dr. Sears Jr. was on. THey were saying that the parents failure to vaccinate was causing an uprise in Measles, mumps and rubella and is spreading it to babies too young to get vaccinated. Both sides are so scary to new moms, we can’t win!!!foleybelle2008-03-25 12:30:20
March 25, 2008 at 1:58 pm #49330AnonymousInactiveYes, you will find a lot of strong opinions on this site and the threads usually get closed. But, I think it is a valuable topic!
Addy contracted Measles from the MMR vaccination at 15 months. When I took her in to see the doctor after she got the rash and fever, I was told it was “just a reaction”. After researching for myself, it was not a reaction and was in fact, the Measles! I was outraged and did as much research as I could to study the US’s vaccination schedule. I urge every parent to research this! Addy has since not received another vaccination. If we have any more children, they will be on a selective delayed schedule. It is astonishing how many vaxes infants get before 12 months of age on a typical schedule. Addy is only 1 shot behind the regular schedule….but she will not receive that one until much later. Research, research, research! There are too many things out there that just do not add up….addysmommy2008-03-25 14:01:33
March 25, 2008 at 2:33 pm #49335AnonymousInactiveI think the key is to be informed, but to be critical as to what information you’re arming yourself with. There are a lot of false facts and scare tactics from either side as both insist that their facts are correct. Like I said, a search will likely get you the info you’re looking for.
March 25, 2008 at 2:36 pm #49336AnonymousInactiveVery true, Lori. You have to be careful about what you read and make sure the info is from a reputable site. I get a lot of info straight from the CDC’s website. It is a great place to start.
March 25, 2008 at 8:08 pm #49356AnonymousInactiveSheri, I am sorry for what you are going through with your son . I hope that things start to get better for him. I know that can be hard on the whole family. I will certainly say prayer for all of you.
I have been doing some research regarding vaccines, and don’t like what I find. I, too, am not anti-vaccine, but pro SAFE vaccine. I know there are good arguments for both sides of the coin, but I tend to err on the side of caution. If my ped’s office will let me, I think I will delay the MMR.March 25, 2008 at 9:30 pm #49364AnonymousInactivei agree 100% with sheri..
we are WAY behind our vaccines.. shane had his 2 month and 4 month set and thats it! i feel like they are way to young for how they are currently being made. i also think shane MIGHT have been effected.. after his 4 month set.. he begin jumping a whole lot.. like his reflexes were trippled if that makes any sense. .. and i would love to blame his allergies on them as well 😉 but who knows? i just dont like what they do to our kids..and would love to have safer vaccines as well.i plan on starting shane back up on his vaccines once he turns two..and at 2 and a half or maybe even 3 i want to start his MMR’s but seperate them as well at least 6 months apart.its scary on both ends.. i get scared that if he catches something i would never forgive myself.. but then on the other side.. if it pushes out autism or other immune system reactions.. i would feel guilty as well! so.. i think a safe vaccine plan is ideal..March 27, 2008 at 12:26 pm #49446AnonymousInactiveI feel the vaccine dilemma too. But I think it’s a decision that everyone makes for themselves and their family.
When I was a baby, I got horribly sick from the DPT. From the pertussis part of the vaccine. I had to be rushed to the ER. Very scary for my mom. I have never had the pertussis part again and that is such a hassle for me. Every time I enrolled in a school (and even college) you have to submit your immunization records. Even some jobs (healthcare related) that I have had needed my shot records. Every time someone noticed I was missing the pertussis and I had to get a letter from the doc explaining why. EVERY TIME.I know that my parents got some type of $$ from the government for my reaction to this immunization. If your child has a serious reaction to a vaccine, here’s the info for getting compensated:National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program1-800-338-2382March 31, 2008 at 1:12 pm #49656AnonymousInactivePotential good news for those vaccine-phobes out there:
I read that the powers-that-be will be convening on April 11th to review the current vaccine schedule. It may very well be changed as a result of that meeting.
DH and I have decided to wait until Amelia is at least 2 (who knows, maybe later) to continue with her vaccine schedule. And then we will get them separately when we do and space them out. We just don’t feel these little bodies can handle so many at once, especially live viruses.March 31, 2008 at 1:51 pm #49657AnonymousInactiveOh, wow! Where did you read that? That is great news! I hope they change it.
March 31, 2008 at 2:15 pm #49659AnonymousInactiveWell, I must admit it was a post from David Kirby who wrote “Evidence of Harm”. He stated that the meeting is open to the public and he will be there. He posts on The Huffington Post. So, we can just wait and see if it is indeed true since it’s not far off! If they change it, good news indeed!
BTW, I am not of like mind The Huffington Post. I have just been very interested with the recent vaccine/autism debate, which led me there. So, we’ll see if we do get a change in the vaccine schedule… I feel there is a lot of public pressure to do so, so we may see a change!newmomofone2008-03-31 21:38:02
April 1, 2008 at 6:46 pm #49725AnonymousInactiveSorry, all… I know this is such a controversial subject. The meeting of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee that I was speaking of can be found on the CDC’s website at
http://www.cdc.gov/od/science/iso/agenda.htm. This meeting will be held in DC on April 11th. Hopefully good things will come of it and the current vaccine schedule! -
