My dd who turned 9 months today had some funny looking pus-like dischage around her labia possibly from her vagina. I noticed this on couple of occassions and took her to her Ped for check up. The Ped says her vagina area looks good and wants me to apply Lotrimin or any other diaper rash cream which I use inside her labia(not in her vagina) and says the discharge was possibly from the skin.
I find it difficult to accept as she had discharge right after she had bath and I got her cleaned. Can skin have dischage which can cover whole labia? Another thing I have noticed these days that she gets diaper rashes which starts around her labia and slowly spreads to her bottom and only antifungal creams like Lotrimin works….
Do you think she has vaginal infection or its skin around labia is infected? She also does not allow me to have a look or apply cream.

My girls had ocassional fungal diaper rashes which always cleared up with Monistat or Lotrimin. To keep them from coming back, she tells me to use the Monistat or Lotrimin for an additional three days after the rash clears up.
As for the discarge, my girls never had that, but I’d worry about some kind of infection. Like you, I doubt it’s from the skin. If it continues I would ask the doctor to do a culture.

Its does not make sense to me that it could be from skin..I shall try to use the Lotrimin for a week or so (the skin looks good infact…so, I dont know how to make out whether Lotrimin worked or not).

Liza used to get lots of fungal rashes, but for her I think the cause was that she was on low dose antibiotics for kidney reflux until she was 18 months old. She was a little milk sensitive, too though. Until she was about 18 months old she’d get a really bad stuffy nose from dairy. So, maybe there is some connection between milk sensitivity and fungal rashes. You never know.
Maybe try a different diaper. Liza was always worse with Pampers for some reason. She got fewer rashes with Luvs and Huggies. Also wipes can be a problem. I always used the unscented brands and I started to pat her bottom dry before diapering her. That seemed to help alot. Yeast thrives in moisture.

When bathing you do not need to use soap in vaginal area which can cause more harm than good at times. Diaper rashes tend to be more fungal in nature – skin has yeast on it and when kept in a closed, warm, moist enviroment can cause rashes and infections. Keeping clean and dry with frequent diaper changes helps. The suggestion about changing wipes and diapers is good. Hope this helps.

I did try out many kinds of diaper and Huggies seemed to suit her best and she is on that since a long time. Looks like I need to leave her bare bottom often, but since she is crawling these days, it going to be tough time for me

Her mom took her to the doc and it ended up being a vaginal yeast infection. It’s not surprising that baby girls can end up with this so easily since they wear diapers that keep the area warm and moist. If it persists, I would have your Ped do a culture to make sure.
