InactiveI was just wondering whether anyone else was dealing with this or thought it may be related to reflux. My 6 month old son (who has reflux, which seems to be mostly under control with Axid) used to sleep great at night. We rock him to sleep after a bedtime routine. He would sleep in his crib from about 7PM to 6AM without waking. So I know he does not need to eat at night. But lately, after we put him down (when he is totally asleep), he will wake up 2-6 times in the first 2 hours or so. Then he usually sleeps through the night, maybe with one quick waking where he just needs his pacifier. These early wakings may be no big deal, where he just needs his pacifier. Or sometimes he gets really upset and needs to be picked up again.
Anyway, I am trying to figure out whether to do sleep training (I was thinking of using the Sleep Lady’s book). I am not sure whether this would be a bad idea for a baby with reflux, even if it is under control? I know it still bothers him a bit, and I am afraid I won’t know whether he is in pain or just overtired because he gets really hysterical when he is tired. I was also just wondering whether anyone else was dealing with those early wakings and whether reflux could be to blame?

InactiveHis onesie totally sums it up!! What a handsome little guy!!!! I just wanted to say that Sarah has always been a great sleeper as well and around that age she started doing the exact same thing. She would wake up crying 1-3 hours after bed. Turns out it was teething! Even on those rough nights she would also sleep the remaineder of the night just fine. It was those first few hours that were rough. She has been the same ever since. I have learned that if she starts waking up 1-3 hours after bed then SOMETHING is not right…she’s either sick, teething or an ear infection. It’s been a huge clue for us…even before there aren’t any other real symptoms! Do you think there might be something else going on?

InactiveHe’s adorable!
My guess would be that he has outgrown his Axid dose. I’d look into that, or ask to try a PPI like Prevacid or Zegerid before doing any kind of sleep training. It could be that he sleeps better after those first two hours because by then his stomach is empty and his reflux calms down.

InactiveAmy-Thanks for the help (and for the compliments!). I think it could be teething, as he has all the signs of more teeth coming. But he actually already has 2 teeth and this didn’t happen with the first 2. I just brought him to the doctor to be sure that he did not have an ear infection or anything like that, so I am pretty sure he is healthy besides his reflux.
Christine-Thank you! It could definitely be that he has outgrown the dose. I have contacted his doctor about that. I also would like to get him on Prevacid, but the doctor (A GI specialist) has been reluctant for some reason.

InactiveAdriana has been doing the same thing. Some nights she just needs a paci and other nights she needs to be carried. This is actually “good” sleeping behavior for her. I feel lucky that I only have to go in and give her a paci a few times. She is teething alot right now, so maybe its teething.

InactiveOMG he is so cute! Are you sure he’s not hungry? Don’t they go through a growth spurt at that age? Of course, it could also be that he has outgrown his dose. I wish I knew more. I hope things get better soon.

InactiveOMG, he’s SOOOO cute!!! I really have no business dishing out sleep advice about refluxers after our situation with Hailey. It’s SO hard to figure out what the issue is sometimes. For that reason, if sleep issues start rearing their ugly head, I like to bump up the meds and see if that helps. If it does, then you have your answer. If not, then you have one less variable to contend with. Maybe you can try giving him a squirt of mylanta during the rough patch at night and see if that helps him. Good luck.
