InactiveThank you for your wonderful input!
The doctor prescribed prilosec at 4 ml 2x per day 30 min before a bottle.
It is a strenth of 2mg per ml. I did have the pharmacy flavor it with grape. I will be calling them tomorrow to see if I can get a replacement of non flavored and then if I can get the prescription filled each week or bi weekly. I did suggest to my doctor that she should be on this dose 3 times per day rather than just 2. She said no and that this was the starting dose. I am considering not listening to her. I really think that everything I have read is proof enough. I am still giving her the Zantac. How do you know that it is working? She can be so on and off with her symptoms. They do seem to be less but are still there.
Thanks Everyone.

InactiveGenerally you should see less irritability, a good appetite without fussing or crying during feeds, a decrease in irritability after feeds (if this has been a problem) and hopefully more frequent and restful sleep. These would be good signs that the medication is working. It does usually take two weeks on a PPI to see the full effect, so do hang in there and don’t worry if you don’t see immediate change, but if she’s not much better in two weeks you may have to push for a higher dose.
Are you spacing the Zantac and Prilosec several hrs apart?
Good luck!

InactiveSorry…but if it compounded I thought you didn’t have to take it 30mins before the meal? You can take it at the same time?

Inactiveyou can give compounds at any time. you do not have to time them 30 min before a meal.

Inactive… and you can add them to your child’s milk/formula (even though the pharmacy is telling you differently). I would also double check with them and ask what percentage sodium bicarbonate they are using.

InactiveThank you Natalia and Lori.
Yes, I am spacing the Zantac and PPI. What is the reason for this anyway? And…did the mixing the Prilosec with formula work for you ? The pharmacist went into great detail why you couldn’t of which in the end made no sense to me because it takes so long for the drug to become fully effective.
Thanks guys

InactiveThe zantac can interfere with the absorption of the PPI (or something like that!)
We mixed Hailey’s prilosec compound in formula for many many months. When the dose was right, and when it was prepared properly, it worked fine. You just can’t leave it sit in the formula for more than an hour (the less time the better), and it can only be added to something basic. This is only true if the compound is made properly though with enough sodium bicarb (not calcium carbonate). Ask what type of buffer they’re using and how much. I actually asked for a complete printout of EVERYTHING that was put into Hailey’s compound and how much. They didn’t want to do this, but I suspected that they were putting other things in it then what was on the label. I told them that we were suspecting food allergies, and I needed to know every single ingredient. They eventually complied and this was when I found out that they were adding other things that were making the meds unstable. I strongly recommend asking for a printout of every ingredient. Few compounding pharmacies actually know much about this type of med, I’ve found. Good luck.
