So, which is easier, the pump feedings or the regular ones?
November 1, 2006 at 5:56 am #16973AnonymousInactiveI am sorry to hear – is this because her eating has not yet picked up?
When you say the pump vs regular, not sure what you mean…. bear with me. There are 2 types of doing it, either bolus or continous and for each of them, you can either use a pump or use a syringe.
When we started with MAtthew, we had to start with continous feeds. Ie we started giving him some additional formula overnight and we had to start really slowly, something like 10ml per hour and so we used the pump. Slowly, we were able to increase the rate to something like 55ml per hour and then we were able to move to bolus feeds (ie something like 120ml in about 5 minutes, which is what i do overnight). BUt it took us time to get here, because feeding through the button is not the same as oral feeding and babies do not handle it as well and you have ot be careful… or at least that is most peopleĀ“s experience.
Now, we do bolus feeds also during the day…. Matthew will eat orally and then i will get a syringe and finish his feeding… his stomach is slowly stretching but i think we now can do a total of 10 ounces per feeding or so.
If you tell us what she is eating, etc maybe we can suggest a starting point???
I know that Heather had to start increasing feedings a few weeks ago and nobody had told her about going slowly about it… and Bryce was not doing well… i know that she was going to start increasing very slowly and maybe she can tell us how it went?
Hope this helps… if you tell us a bit more about schedules etc… maybe we can help more. Also what is she eating orally and cal per ounce? If your baby is able to tolerate a higher cal per ounce formula, it is easier with the tubes because you do not need as much volume

What we do is bolus feed during the day and continuous feed at night. For the bolus, I give him whatever he will take by mouth and then feed him the rest through his tube. He eats 4 oz every 3 hours. For the continuous feed it’s like giving him two of his feeds – so 8 oz. at night.
Like Thais said, just make sure you work her up to the desired volume slowly. Bryce wasn’t gaining well so we recently increased his continuous pump feeds at night. When we increased we had to go slowly… What we did was went up about 5 ml on the volume each night until we reached the desired volume, and then we started increasing his rate (ml per hour) by one ml each night so he could get the feed a little faster. We went from 35 ml to 40 ml/hr. I think they recommend starting at 25 ml/hr (or maybe your doc already told you something different).I hope that all makes sense. Please let us know if you have any more questions. Good luck

November 5, 2006 at 4:53 pm #17232AnonymousInactiveSo, over the past week, I’ve learned that she can only take 1.5 extra ounces after nursing (Bolus feeds). I was supposed to be doing 2 oz. We’re supplimenting with 24 calories per ounce Enfamil AR. Other than that I have no idea what her calorie intake is because we’re still nursing on demand for the most part. The goal is to get her to where she’s taking in about 6 oz a feeding, which hopefully won’t be a problem for my supply.
November 5, 2006 at 7:18 pm #17238AnonymousInactiveGood luck with the weight gain & with your milk supply! Hopefully the extra calories and bolus feeds will do the trick. The increased calories is what really helped Bryce start gaining again- he’s on 28 calorie breastmilk right now.
Hope she starts gaining well!
November 5, 2006 at 9:20 pm #17250AnonymousInactiveThat’s great that she’s nursing well. I hope the extra calories plump her up!
November 6, 2006 at 12:36 am #17258AnonymousInactiveHow did you add extra calories to your BM?
November 6, 2006 at 12:54 am #17259AnonymousInactiveWe mix in powdered goat’s milk & microlipids. We use the powdered goat’s milk instead of powdered formula – Bryce just could never tolerate any of it.
November 6, 2006 at 2:35 pm #17294AnonymousInactiveOh, that makes sense. I’m trying to get my supply up so that I can mix the powdered formula with my BM instead of just water.
November 9, 2006 at 12:00 am #17487AnonymousInactiveI’m hating using this thing! Aidan hates it too. I’ve tried the continuous while she’s asleep, but it wakes her up. So, we’ve stuck with the Bolus, but it’s terrible.
She’s also started getting concentrated EBM at the sitter’s everyday. Now, it’s concentrated to 27 calories per ounce. So, maybe that will help.
November 9, 2006 at 9:20 am #17502AnonymousInactiveAmanda, how are you trying to increase your supply. We saw Dr. Jack Newman (a pretty famous bf guru) and he gave me specific doses for fenugreek and blessed thistle to take daily. It really did work and I had a huge supply… too bad that my supply wasn’t really the problem and it was reflux. Anyhow, let me know if you want the details and I’ll try to look for it. Only downside was the fenugreek made me smell like a pickle!
Hang in there with the tube feeds. I’ve read that there’s a learning curve. Hopefully Thais or others with experience will chime in with some useful advice for you. BIG HUGS!

First of all, only concentrating the milk will be tough on her tummy. Mosts moms have to increase concentration slowly…. very slowly! So, if you can and have some room for it, i would suggest going from 20cal (which is what milk is supposed to be i believe), to let;s say 22cal then to 24 and then to 27 maybe over the course of a couple of weeks?? I know that volume is not changing but the stomach and intestines have to work harder and so many mommies had to do it this way.
As per sleeping and continous – what is the rate (and how old is Aidan… sorry i forgot)… some people have to start at 5ml per hour and then increase slowly… others can start higher. I think we did 10ml per hour for one day and then went up until we reached 30ml per hour for a few weeks. Then we moved to 55ml per hour…
I am sorry that you are finding this difficult. It is so frustrating that no doctors explains things to you – they just throw the button at you and think that it is easy to work with volumes and concentrations bt it is not!
I am going to suggest another board, in case things get tough for you — there are a lot more babies on feeding tubes. It is http://www.parent-2-parent.com/foum
there is a subforum only on tube feeding issues and you may want to browse it
