InactiveOk i really thought we were doing better but now we have hit another low. I know this is going to sound crazy but i need to know if anyone else has experienced this and knows how to help me. I have written before and everyone has been a huge help. My son (3 months old) has acid reflux. I went out of town last week and he stayed with my parents. We were thrilled to find out that he hadnt thrown up in 6 days. Since we have been back and brought him home he has thrown up with every bottle we have fed him. He went to the sitter today and did great but once again when we got home he threw up. Why is this happening???????? He is great with everyone except me and his father at our house. I just dont get it and i am at a total lose. I cant think why he would be throwing up with us and no one else…we have provided my parents and the sitter with everything so i know its all the same. Please help if you have any idea why this is happening.
Thanks!!!

Inactivethe only thing that i can think of is that that your parents and the babysitter aren’t telling you what is realy happening??? Not to discredit them in anyway but sometimes they don’t want you to worry and feel bad. I always tell my family that i need to know everything that my dd did when she was with them b/c if they dont tell me then i can’t treat her properly

InactiveMy boyfriends mom is like that too when she watches Aidan. She says hes an angel when hes with her. Doesnt tell us when he cries, or is irritable, or spits up, or anything. I know shes doing this because I was walking up to her house to pick him up one afternoon and he was crying and very irritable and she still insisted when I walked in the door that he was wonderful. My guess is she might be afraid I wont let her watch him if he is anything but perfect with her.
Ive tried to explain to her that we NEED to know about his bad times with her, but shes oblivious at times….

Id try talking to them.

InactiveThat could be.

My dh often tells me that Myles pooped while I was gone when in fact he did not because dh knows I get worried when Myles doesn’t poop (he is often constipated) and I may use the thermometer on when I get home.

Here’s another possibilty. Myles had a few periods of time when his vomitting stopped and I was sure his reflux was gone, only to have it return after a week or so. One time he didn’t throw up for nearly three weeks and then it started it again.

InactiveI have thought that from time to time about my sitter but didnt think my parents would do that to me. I am going to talk with both of them. I need to know the truth because right now i feel like it is something me and Dillon’s dad are doing. Thanks for your quick response…i have been going crazy trying to figure out what i am doing wrong. I will find out the truth tomorrow…hopefully!!!!

InactiveMy guess is that it’s a coincidence. We’ve also had some periods where she’s done well (by her standards) and then we’ve hit rock bottom again… reflux is like that, which is why you often hear of the “reflux rollercoaster”.

InactiveDo you know how much they are feeding him? I know for us our ds would be the happiest baby as long as you didn’t try to feed him. Daycare would get 3 or 4 oz in him all day and to them he didn’t seem hungry so they didn’t try to get any more in him. But by the time I saw him in the evening he was VERY HUNGRY but also still in pain… and I sat with and worked with him to get what he needed in a way that they just wouldn’t or couldn’t. It was traumatic on all of us but as his Mother, I knew that even though he is screaming that he was also hungry.
I guess what I’m getting at is you probably focus in on what he eats, how much at one time, how long it takes per feeding, etc. and as his parents you know when you need to work with him…
Also, how many of you have heard from your parents about “we just didn’t have this reflux stuff when you were babies…” ? I think our parents generation DID have babies with reflux but they just learned to deal with it because there was no label and not much help from anyone. They probably view what is going on with your son as “normal” even though we know it is not normal nor is it something to accept when your child is in pain.

InactiveMy first thought was are there any pets at your house and not at theirs? Could it be something in your home environmentally that is bothering your son? Heating system? New paint or carpet? etc…..

InactiveKaelyn used to do exactly the same thing. It would make me crazy!!! She loves to people watch and take in new environments/people, so she always did better in a “different” situation. My MIL watched her several times before Kaelyn started showing her “true” self. She thought that we were just over-reacting like all new parents until Kaelyn had a truly awful day with her. Then she started treating us like we were saints.
She couldn’t wait to hand Kaelyn over to us by the end of that day. Kaelyn also has always done better at daycare. I think that all of the activity there distracts her and helps her forget her discomfort.October 18, 2006 at 7:47 am #15948Anonymous
InactiveWell I am hoping that it was just coincidence. I have talked to my mom and sitter and they both say he has NOT been throwing up. I believe my mom because she has been so worried about him that i think if he was bad with her she would want me to take him back to the dr. The funny thing is we dont have any pets and my parents have two cats and my sitter has a dog, so it cant be that. Well we had a good day yesterday so maybe it really is just the rollercoaster ride. Thanks for all your comments, they truly helped.

Inactivei know how you feel, my dd would go for days w/o having severe sandifers episodes and then my mom would come to watch her and i would go take a nap. regardless to say i would wake up to my 74 year old mother(who had ten kids herself) screaming that the baby was choking
. I think it’s a mixture of enviromental and other things that we just can’t control although ciggarettes do aggravate so i have heard!!!October 18, 2006 at 9:43 am #15954Anonymous
Inactive(((hugs))) to you Laura. I’m glad you had a good day at least. This roller coaster does suck, doesn’t it?

InactiveYou can say that again!!!! But i have to say i am so happy i found this website. It has really helped me have somewhere to come for support and also to remind me that i am not alone and other mothers are going through the same thing with their little ones.

InactiveThey had reflux when I was little, a friend of mine had a fundo (or something like that) when he was a baby. Also I had polysternic stenosis (sp?), projectile vomited all over the place until I was 3 months old. The issue is that it wasn’t called reflux. it was ALL labeled colic. I just think that they didn’t know about silent reflux, which I get because the babies didn’t spit up. That being said, although it turns out that my mom believes I did indeed have reflux, and looking back, I probably was in pain from it, I was fine when I turned one, and never had any kind of damage from it. …….as far as the controling the environment-lol I am a ciggarette polieceman (as my older son calls me) I don’t let people who smoke near my kids, and that includes family (as well as my husband he has a huge incentive to quit, he has to change his clothes and wait 30 mins before coming anywhere near either kid if he decided he HAS to have one-which he also has to go for a long walk to do). If I’m in public and for some reason someone is smoking near me, all I do is whip out my older sons inhaler and explain nicely that he’s allergic to ciggarette’s and they can either put it out or watch a little boy have an asthma attack…subtle I am not ;).

Jill, you crack me up!
YOU GO GIRL!
I know what you mean about reflux being labled “colic” and that’s why I HATE it when I hear people tell a mother that their baby is just colicy and they have to deal with it. Twice now I’ve helped other Mother’s discover reflux because I pulled them aside, listened to what was going on, and steered them to their doctor.
Here’s an awful story though. I have a co-worker who obviously had severe reflux as a baby. The doctor told her Mom, “you’ve just got a spitter here.” Poor girl was in PAIN her entire life until finally at age 22 she decided she had had enough and she went to the GI. After 6 months of various diets, etc. they were finally going to scope her but before they did that the doctor told her she might want to see a psychiatrist because they thought it was all in her head. Well, they got in there and found that SHE HAD NO VALVE!!!
They figured she had one but years of acid erroded it away! She had a surgery that kind of tied a knot at the bottom of her esophogas to keep the acid down. That held for about 15 years and she just had the surgery again. It is because of this story that I worry about lasting damage from reflux…. And I think my son did have lasting damage by not being diagnosed until he was 10.5 months old. Fortunately though, I think by getting diagnosed he healed but it just took longer than most kids. -
