InactiveMy 2mo old is on Prilosec (compounded into a liquid) and I was reading that this should be given on an empty stomach. He is exclusively breast fed so how long do I have to wait before giving it to him?
He feeds on demand and it is really hard to hold him off when he is hungry. The morning dose shouldn’t be too hard since he sleeps most of the night, but when he wakes up he wants to eat right away and making him wait 30mins after sleeping for 8hrs isn’t going to work.
And the evening dose, he tends to cluster feed at night still and sometimes eats quite often during this time of day.
I just want to make sure he is getting the most relief possible. Is it possible the an immediate release med is better for young babies? My ped really doesn’t know much about reflux or their meds I don’t think. We just had our 2mo appt today, but I can always call and ask for a different med if need be.

InactiveThe compound can be given any time around meals etc…. It is the other forms of the meds that you have to worry about timing. The trick is making sure the compound is stable. We did have to go through a special compounding pharmacy that would overnight the med to us to make sure it was compounded correctly, and we had great success with it as well as not having to worry about timing.
There are other moms who will chime in with the correct compound as I don’t have it memorized…..

InactiveWe really had to work to find a pharmacy that would compoud it for us. I guess they aren’t very common. There is one near us that almost exclusively does hard to find meds and compounding. I never knew such a thing existed.
So I am hoping it is compounded correctly. How will I know if it is or not?
So when using a compounded liquid you don’t need to worry about the empty stomach? That would make life easier.

InactiveThat’s right, with the compounded meds you don’t need to worry about giving it on an empty stomach and timing it around meals. We’re using the compounded Prevacid which has been great for Bryce.

Inactivecompounds dont need to be timed. but the majority of the time they are not made correctly and they are unstable.
this is how it needs to be made:

InactiveAsk for a printout of all the ingredients and amounts put into the compound. If you see any flavourings (simple syrup, sweet syrup, sweetener, bitter stop, stevia powder, oraplus, flavouring) then you know it’s not being made correctly. Then look for the amounts of bicarb and mg/ml as per the description in Natalia’s link. I’ve yet to find a pharmacy who makes it correctly. It works for some, but never did for us.
