Shelby,
Maybe search for my old teething posts, but my ped authorized hte simultaneous use of Hyland’s teething tablets, Hyland’s teething gel, children’s tylenol, children’s benadryl and all Lucas’ reflux meds during teething. Once Lucas was one, I think we dosed him 8-10 teething tablets AT A TIME- sometimes every 4-6 hours. Woh, I just realized I sound like such a druggie mom! I’m really not, but the teething was so severe….I also used aloe vera juice and it seemed to really help with pain during teething. You can give drops repeatedly during the night or during the day. I used Lily of the Desert 100% organic aloe vera juice, needs to be refrigerated. Check for my old posts on aloe vera.
Once during teething, Lucas refused to eat solids for 8 days straight. He was 15 months old. He nursed ONLY for these days. When we tried to sneak food in, he’d spit it out. He would wake up every 20 minutes for periods at night….crying, screaming, etc. etc. for many nights in a row. It eventually started to follow a pattern every time he teethed, so at least after the third or fourth time things got so bad, I knew what was going on. The first time it happened where he was inconsolable we took him into the ER (I was in VA as well visiting family) — he’d been crying for about 24 hours, not sleeping, etc, and I figured some sort of sickness. They sent us home after testing, etc. saying it “must be a virus” . Looking back later, it completely fit the profile of his teething bouts.
As for the daytime sleeping, I would say maybe he’s just exhausted and finally crashes.
Also, make sure to notice if he’s waking more frequently since going off meds, or waking differently– like, is he fussier but still waking the same amount; or waking more, but not more upset about it; or waking more and is more upset about it. This could have something to do with meds. Our specialist and ped have repeatedly told me that teething makes reflux TEN TIMES worse than “normal” reflux.
Hope something in here is helpful. Hang in there. What does the chiro say about his reflux? We used probiotics (good for gi health and constipation issues) and aloe vera when things got really bad. This was in addition to meds from the traditional docs.
I hated teething so much– and have never quite heard the same sob story as my own with teething except for here. I would have gladly paid for full baby dentures and gone into serious debt to do it.
