What to do for Cough?

Ok, so Ben’s still on the Omnicef for his ear infection, which, after a visit to the doc. today, is finally clearing up. However, he has also caught the cold that his father has, so now his is dealing with wicked post nasal drip and a raspy cough that wakes him up. I hope that this cold doesn’t lead to an another ear infection!

Anything I can do for the cough? It’s not constant, mostly during sleep. I am using the saline drops, the humidifier, some vapor rub type stuff, and the doc. suggested a bit of benedryl for a few days. He listened to his chest and said it didn’t sound good in there, but he didn’t really say what to do about it.

(I’m a bit worried it might be allergies… )

We do benadryl to help “dry” up the boys when they have post nasal drip and it really does help. I would have suggested that, but you already got that advice

Hopefully others will have more answers…

I use OTC Delsym for my kids at bedtime and most of the time it works very well. It lasts 4 hours. You’d have to ask the doc for the dose for him though because he’s under two.

Or, you could ask for a prescription for a cough medicine with codeine. Codeine is one of the best cough suppressants. It does cause drowsiness, but that’s not a problem if you’re giving it at bedtime. I’ve used it for all of mine at least once or twice and it worked quite well, but it doesn’t usually last all night like the Delsym does.
