InactiveHello! We are about to max out our Zantac dose and did not have good success with Prevacid. As such, I am thinking about requesting Zegerid for my daughter (I already checked and my insurance does cover it). But, I wanted to get more info from folks regarding their experience:
1. How old was your child when they started Zegerid?
2. How long have they been on the med?
3. What dose (i.e. did you follow Dr. Phillips recommendations, or did your doc go with a lower dose?)
4. What other treatments did you use before switching to Zegerid? Why did you switch?
5. How long have you been on Zegerid?
6. Have you experienced any negative side effects?
7. How much relief has your child experienced and how quickly?
Sorry for all of the questions. Thanks for your help!

Inactivewe tired zantac, didnt do much. prevacid gave him headaches i belive, he was irritable and always rubbed his eyes.
zegerid has been great, no side effects. i noticed that docs dosing doesnt work-we have to go by dr phillips dosing. my son was on 27 mg prevacid which worked- but he had side effects. now he is on 42 mg zegerid and doing great. zegerid is immediate release so it worked in a day or two and you can give it with formula.
you are lucky that your insurance covers it!September 23, 2006 at 1:44 pm #14144Anonymous
Inactive1. How old was your child when they started Zegerid?
8 weeks
2. How long have they been on the med?
My son is now 5 months
3. What dose (i.e. did you follow Dr. Phillips recommendations, or did your doc go with a lower dose?)
We went with the suggested dose from Dr. Phillips, which was 30mg per day, Evan was like 12lbs at that time.
4. What other treatments did you use before switching to Zegerid? Why did you switch?
We used Prilosec, Prevacid and Zantac. Each worked for a week or so. Looking back, I’m sure they would of all worked had we been on a high enough dose… I really am a firm believer in being on the correct dose. We have had to increase Evan’s dose a few times due to breakthrough, and each time we increased his symptoms would subside.
6. Have you experienced any negative side effects?
We did experience loose stools, however, his system finally got used to the med. Others have complained that their babies do not like the taste or texture… What has worked for us and a few others is to mix the dose with a small amt. of formula, like one or two ounces.
7. How much relief has your child experienced and how quickly?
I can not say enough good things about Zegerid, it has been our lifesaver! We noticed a difference within two days. Although, I know it’s not for every baby, I would strongly recommend trying it if you can.
Good Luck to you!

Inactive1. How old was your child when they started Zegerid? a little over 1 month
2. How long have they been on the med? my daughter will be 8 months old next weeekend
3. What dose (i.e. did you follow Dr. Phillips recommendations, or did your doc go with a lower dose?) We followed Dr. Phillips recommendations. It took some convincing of our doctor, but eventually we won the battle.
4. What other treatments did you use before switching to Zegerid? Why did you switch? Abby was diagnosed at 2 weeks of age. We tried Pepcid and Prevacid Solutabs before switching. The prevacid may have worked if we would have had the right dose but I heard about the Zegerid and Marci-kids on this site and thought it looked much easier (don’t have to wait 30 minutes after giving the med, works quickly).
5. How long have you been on Zegerid? about 7 months
6. Have you experienced any negative side effects? Like Jenay said, loose stools were a side effect but it was so worth it!!
7. How much relief has your child experienced and how quickly? I would say she has had 100% relief. She was better after a couple of days and total relief within a couple weeks. We too have had to increase her dose periodically when she had breakthrough symptoms. She started on it at 1 month (8 pounds) at 3.5 ml 3 times per day and is now about 16 pounds and is on 5.5ml 3 times per day.
We use the 20 mg packets which we really like. It is so easy to mix up and the mixed up version keeps 21 days in the fridge or 24 hours out of the fridge which makes it great for traveling and taking to daycare. I truly can not say enough good about Zegerid – it has meant the world to us and Abby is so much healthier because of it. As with any reflux med, the correct dose is key. There is really no need to worry about overdosing as Zegerid is a pro-drug and only works on the acid secreting cells, not affecting the rest of the body.
Hope you can get the answers you need. Please feel free to post any other quesitons you may have

Inactive1. How old was your child when they started Zegerid? 1 month old.
2. How long have they been on the med? 18 months
3. What dose (i.e. did you follow Dr. Phillips recommendations, or did your doc go with a lower dose?) We have a great doctor who followed Dr. Phillips by his own choice.
4. What other treatments did you use before switching to Zegerid? Why did you switch? We first tried Zantac but it needed to be increased to often. Then we tried prevacid solu-tabs but it was so hard to schedule it around such a young baby.
5. How long have you been on Zegerid? 16 months
6. Have you experienced any negative side effects? We didn’t experience any negative side effects.
7. How much relief has your child experienced and how quickly? In just a couple of days we had a happy baby. Like others we had to increase the dosage every once in awhile and now we are lowering it to wean him off.

InactiveHi and welcome!!!
1. How old was your child when they started Zegerid?
4 months old
2. How long have they been on the med?
A little over a month
3. What dose (i.e. did you follow Dr. Phillips recommendations, or did your doc go with a lower dose?)
We jumped straight to the Dr. Phillips recommendation! Thankfully our doctor agreed! (10mg 3x a day) She went from 8mg a day to 30mg!!!
4. What other treatments did you use before switching to Zegerid? Why did you switch?
Started on Zantac, didn’t help. Switched to omeprazole b/c insurance didn’t cover Zantac. We weren’t seeing the results we felt like we should be seeing so I kept looking around on the internet and THANKFULLY found this website and realized the pharmacy compounded omeprazole was becoming ineffective in as little as a week b/c flavoring was being added. Pushed for Zegerid because of the research I found on this site. Our doctor happily switched us!
5. How long have you been on Zegerid?
Since mid-August, so a little over a month.
6. Have you experienced any negative side effects?
Would you call a HAPPY baby a side effect?

7. How much relief has your child experienced and how quickly?
It took about 3 or 4 days to see an improvement and about a week to see major changes. Sarah developed some sensory issues b/c of the reflux pain so falling asleep was a screaming battle!!! The first sign of “relief” was when she would fall asleep with relatively little fuss. Everyday just keeps getting a little better!!! Even still, a month later, we see improvements.
I understand your hesitation/stress/frustration about having a baby with reflux. But I can say you are LUCKY that your little one will be getting relief so young. I only wish I could have started Sarah on Zegerid at 1 month old. I think things could have been SOOOO different for her and my DH and I!!!!!! Trying to think positively…I think we are maybe more appreciative of the happy baby we have now because we know how HORRIBLE things were for so long. Of course, I wish things were perfect from the beginning…but Zegerid has made us more grateful for the HAPPY baby we now have!
Good luck and keep us posted!
Amy
