InactiveLately I’ve been wondering if Hailey will truly ever outgrow this, or if this is going to be around for a long time. She’s a year now and her reflux seems to be flaring up again. Sandifer’s is back (sigh). Feeding strike is back on. It’s maddening!
Have any of you heard any stats on what the chance is that they’ll outgrow it if they still have it so bad at a year. I’m starting worry. I also wonder if maybe she has a hernia or something that’s causing it to be so bad. All I have to do is move her and I hear her reflux. How do they detect a hernia? Is it by scope or by ultrasound. Our scope isn’t until mid September so I’d like to find out before then if we can.
Any thoughts?

Inactiveour ped gi said 18 months to outgrow it. i think a hernia is usually found when a scope is done—put sylvia’s wasn’t seen when she had her scope—-they found it when they went in to do her fundo.

InactiveHi Christine. Thanks so much for responding. I hope your daughter and family is doing well. I’m going to check your update now.

InactiveI don’t know much about hernias, but it’s something to look into. But I
really would suspect food/milk intolerances or allergies based on the
worsening reflux, hives, night wakings, etc. Does your Ped think that
is a possibility?June 5, 2006 at 3:45 pm #9163Anonymous
InactiveActually, the hives weren’t actually hives. Embarrassingly, it was a heat rash. If you hold her for a long time b/c she’s so sweaty she gets marks where your fingers were. Ped GI did a blood test for something or other to look for allergies, but said that we’d have to scope to look for EOS cells. Could be an intolerance. But he said that with a kid with a bad feeding aversion, then there’s really no choice. We can’t restrict her like that. If we try to give a hypoallergenic formula, then she’s going to need a feeding tube b/c she won’t take anything else. Tried rice milk but she didn’t like it. She does like soy milk somewhat, but that doesn’t really solve anything. I think that the night wakings are a combination of reflux and behaviour, but ped is really against letting her cry until she is a bit better. Who knows what it is.

InactiveWell glad to hear they weren’t hives! It’s so tough – I’m sorry you and
Hailey are continuing to have such a hard time. There’s no way your Ped
can get her scope moved up?June 6, 2006 at 9:02 pm #9245Anonymous
InactiveI’ve heard that most outgrow reflux by 18 months. As for the hernia, I think it may even be able to be seen on an upper GI. I was told that Noah didnt have a hernia when they did his upper gi. I do know that in most cases it is found when a scope is done. I’ve been scoped twice and it was discovered then that I had a mild hernia. So I think the less severe the hernia, the more invasive procedures are needed to find it.
I’m sorry that Hailey is on another feeding strike. How much is she taking per day? Are you getting any help or making any progress with the OT? Is she still sleep feeding too? It is maddening when they dont want to eat or drink. I would think that with the hot weather, these little ones would be so thirsty!

InactiveI wish I knew the answer to that too! Everytime he has a good day I start to get hopeful only to be letdown. They all told me once Isaac was walking that would end the reflux issues-well that didn’t happen and he has been walking for around 2 months now. Now the goal is 18-24 months when it started at 6-12 months. I sometimes wonder if he will ever grow out of it.
Hernias I know a little about. I had one at 2 months old and had surgery to correct it. They are still watching Isaac for this b/c they said that he has a slightly higher chance b/c of me having one. Pretty much like Lisa said it just depends on the severity. The best way to see it would be by scope.
I really hope that things start to ease up for you. Big hugs!

InactiveMy friend had a daughter with sever reflux that was not even diagnosed or treated until she was 18 months old. (Incompetent small town dr.s)
She was on previcid until just after her third birthday. I am sure the fact that she was untreated for so long made it worse, but it did eventually go away. She is now four and doing great. I hope it will not take that long for Hailey, or any of our kids for that matter

InactiveThanks guys. Some days I really just wonder if it will pass.
Lisa- Hope that you’re doing well. Hailey had her 1 year appointment so I’m going to post an update as soon as I get a chance.
