hey everyone..
spoke with gi nurse.. she agrees it would be a good idea to add wheat to our dairy and soy free diet..
she didnt say gluten free diet.. but wheat free..i guess because his endo. came back neg.. but i know some of you have said he can still have it.so.. i thought i want to be as strict as possible with his wheat free diet..and buy gluten free products.soo.. a couple questions:do i really need to buy “gluten free” or can i just read the ingredients and if it says no wheat/barley/rye/oats.. then its safe? or does it have to have to have the label on it.so for instance .. his rice milk.. we do the rice dream.. safe?and any ideas for foods are much welcomed. .. wheat free isnt too hard but dairy and soy added to it ..is pretty hard!!and how long would you guys say should it be until i see improvement?thanks again as alwayslaurenFebruary 7, 2008 at 8:28 pm #48092AnonymousInactiveThere are a lot of foods out there that are gluten free, but don’t say gluten free specifically on them, so I’d say do a lot of label reading. I don’t have time right now, but I’ll try to look at some of Kaelyn’s favorites this weekend and list the ones that are also soy free.

we read the ingredients lists—plus the allergy statements really help, although they will only list wheat, not other gluten containing products. you also have to avoid malt, or malt flavoring. there are a lot of items that are gluten free that do not have the label “gluten free”—but i sure appreciate it when it is on the label!

February 8, 2008 at 2:15 am #48106AnonymousInactiveand kim…. do you follow a gluten free or wheat free diet for kaelyn?
February 8, 2008 at 5:57 pm #48122AnonymousInactivethere was a discussion about rice dream on the celiac board. rice dream has so many ppms of gluten in it, but it is what is considered in the acceptable range to be called gluten free. it is also possible that they changed their recipe.
i just bought some benefiber and the ingredient in it is wheat dextrin—-and right below that it says GLUTEN FREE—–now, there is a contradiction in terms!!LOL!!!wheat starch is a controversial item, also. in the US, it is not considered safe for a celiac, but in some other country (?) they consider it safe for a gluten free diet. i wonder if the people that consume it have their blood tested on a regular basis to see if they are actually keeping themselves gluten free?there are a lot of things that say “processed on equipment that also processes wheat, or in a facility that processes wheat. we, personally, go ahead and buy these products, and so far we have not had a problem—-although the twins numbers are higher than they ought to be—but they may cheat a little on their diet. molly is really good about her diet.kevieb2008-02-08 18:02:39
February 8, 2008 at 8:09 pm #48132AnonymousInactiveWe just do wheat free for Kaelyn since her issue is a wheat allergy. I just got an email update from Kids with Food Allergies. Their site now has an updated link to lists of foods to avoid for allergies. It doesn’t have a gluten list, but the wheat list will help a little and the soy and milk lists are good.
February 11, 2008 at 1:04 am #48155AnonymousInactiveLauren, I sent you a PM with lots of gluten, casein, soy free food tips – hope you got that.
We saw noticable improvements in Ben after about 3 days of removing casein. Apparently casein and it’s effects disappear from the body more quickly than gluten. After stopping gluten (which we did about 1 week after cutting out casein) it was a more gradual and less pronounced effect.Good luck, and let me know if you need any help or advice! Ben’s been on a strict gluten and casein free diet since November and I’ve learned a wealth of information since then! -
