InactiveHello, I was just wondering at what age babies typically outgrow MSPI. My daughter was diagnosed with this and GERD at 3 months of age. A couple of days ago, my ather-in-law fed my daughter some ice cream forgetting that the is allergic to milk. I was terrified that she was going to have a bad reaction and be in a lot of pain, but she had no reaction to it. She was absolutely fine. Could it be because she is outgrowing the allergy? She is only 7 months old now, but I am wondering if I couldn’t put her back on regular formula since the ice cream didn’t bother her.

Inactivefirst you said its MSPI and then you called it an allergy….do you know which one she has?
to me it doesnt sound like she has either one if she did fine with ice cream.February 21, 2007 at 12:28 pm #25428Anonymous
InactiveMy GI took her off regular formula at 3 months and put her on soy. She couldn’t tolerate either, so he put her on Alimentum He said that she was allergic to the protiens in both milk and soy formulas…..

InactiveOne time isn’t enough to see a reaction. It takes two weeks for the protiens to build up in the system. What formula is she on? She probably has an intollerance and it may take a couple of weeks on a regular formula to start showing signs of MSPI again. My son was on Neocate formula until he turned one and now he is on Goodstart and he will be 2 tomorrow and he eats almost anything. So I say anywhere between 1 year to 3 years old. Some babies never grow out of it. Good luck on whatever you decide.

if she can handle alimentum then its prob not an allergy…alimentum does have milk in it. my son cant even handle alimentum and he is MSPI….sounds like she may be mildly MSPI…
oh and like the other poster said, i forgot that it can take several weeks to see the after effects of the ice cream..February 21, 2007 at 12:33 pm #25431Anonymous
InactiveShe is currently on Alimentum

InactiveIf you want to do a trial of regular formula can you try Goodstart without DHA/ARA? We found it to be the easiest on our son’s stomach. He still takes it to this day. I would just make sure I took it slow and watched for any signs and if you see any then make sure you get her right back on the Alimentum. Let us know what you decide. I am curious if she does well. Colton was on Neocate but I am wondering if he would have been able to tolerate the Goodstart at a younger age.

InactiveI used Good Start as a dairy trial too. I figured it would be a good choice to start Myles on dairy because of the broken down proteins. I gave him 2 ounces per day for two weeks and then started gradually increasing it as he continued to do well. After a few months on Good Start, I did the same thing with milk. 2 ounces a day for two weeks, and then gradually increased it.

InactiveI’ve read it can take up to 5 years or more for babies/children to grow out of MFPI. Some sites say that most outgrow it by 1 to 2 years. I’ve seen some mothers reporting that their baby outgrew it by 4 to 6 months. It seems to vary greatly.

InactiveWe just visited the GI on Friday and she said at 1 year we can trial a food that has a little dairy in it & see how that goes, and if Dagney still reacts badly, then she’d refer us to an allergist! I’ve always read between 1-2 years is when the MFPI is usually outgrown.

InactiveMy son had MSPI, possibly even MFPI (multiple food protein intolerance). He went undiagnosed for the longest time, and finally we tried Pregestimil at 8 months and he responded well to it at that time. When he was 13 months old, and Pregestimil was suddenly short from the manufacturer, and we couldn’t get it anywhere. We had only 2 cans left, so we started giving him part Pregestimil, part whole milk, and slowly increased the amount of milk over the course of about a month. He did fine, but became more gassy as we increased the milk. I attributed that to lactose intolerance and began treating the milk with Lactaid drops, and the gas problems stopped. He has been on whole milk alone since he was about 14 or 15 months old. He also eats yogurt daily without problem (it is supposed to be low in lactose and the bacteria culture is good for the gut).
I think every child may be different, but sometimes it helps to hear what worked for others. I would personally wait just a bit longer to try a change, maybe till you little one’s first birthday.
Good Luck!
