Inactivewhen i saw the Gi she pretty much said dont try to wean him from the meds until a year old, because of his severity and his high dose. she said he will most likely have reflux into the first year and maybe the second or even third

i forgot to ask about the neocate, and our ped has no idea. she told me he wouldnt need it past 6 months orginally, but i know that is not true. she said the same things about his meds.
when did you all wean from neocate and what do i go to? i hear goodstart is a good choice-or do i go directly to whole milk?November 16, 2006 at 4:53 pm #18170Anonymous
InactiveI’m not sure about the Neocate but this is what our Docs said. While my son was an Alumentium his Ped had us go to Goodstart mixing both. He wanted it done at 4 mths we did it at 6 mths and it was a complete nightmare. Actually I believe this is when he took a turn for the worse. Right after that we saw our first GI and he said anyone with MSPI should not attempt changing to anything from Alumentium or Nutramign before a year. He also said that they usually are on Alumentium or Nutramign until 15 months.
I have never discussed when to wean from Neocate because our docs keep telling me he can be on this for years (but this is because of our situation).
Don’t know if this helps or not?

are you planning on switching soon? or for when she turns 1? if you wait till then i have read that you can just go to milk. if you plan on doing it soon, let me know how it goes!

InactiveMy son started having problems as soon as we started adding an oz to his bottle. However, we continued for a few more days to see if he needed to get adjusted. It was the normal reaction…gas, burping, unable to sleep, spitting up. The eczema & scaly skin over his entire body started right when we switched back over to Alumentium RTF so I’m sure it was building up in him. So I did this a few days before his 6mth checkup so I could ask the ped if there was problems. He informed me to go back to the Alumentium & if he wasn’t better to call & he would prescribe Axid.
Well he never got better it continued to get worse. He was unable to tolerate even the Alumentium & his reflux went out of control. He went from sleeping 12-15 hrs at night to being up 5-6 times a night (sometimes screaming for 3+ hours and nothing to do for him). At the time I was not aware of Neocate & the dr kept telling there was nothing else for him to drink. This continued for 3 months with us only changing the meds & waiting to get into a Ped GI. He was down to about 7 oz. of formula a day & we were sleep feeding him to get it in him.
When he saw the first Ped GI he informed us that he does not recommened taking a baby of Alumentium or Nutramign before their 1st birthday when they have MSPI.
I know my son has other problems that could have caused this. I think by exposing him so early it actually started many of his problems. Looking back if I had it to do over I would have waited a few more months before trying it. I think my Ped had no knowledge of MSPI.
I’m sure this type of reaction doesn’t happen often. Who knows maybe this would have happened anyway and it just happened when we decided to make the change.
Good Luck!

InactiveWe went cold turkey at 13 months from Neocate to Rice Dream enriched Rice milk. Dylan is still on this. He did not have any problems with weight gain at this point, so the less fat than whole milk was not a problem at all for Dylan. I think Rice Milk and Neocate have a similar thin consistancey and taste, so he had no problem with the transition.

InactiveI think this will also be determined by how well he can eat solids. We wean Colt at 9 months from Neocate to Goodstart with out DHA/ARA. I did 2 ounces at a time. It did work for us but the reason we didn’t go to whole milk was because he wasn’t eating solids very well. I went so slow in switching that he was almost a year old when he was totally on all Goodstart.
