InactiveSo Brielle is about to turn a year old. She still wakes evrey 1 1/2 to 2 hours all night. Her pediatrician says this is very common of reflux babies and that most of them NEVER learn how to sleep through the night because they come to associate sleeping with pain.
Whats your experience with your refluxers and their sleep. Does it ever get better?September 5, 2007 at 11:49 am #42193Anonymous

InactiveWe have tried all the over the counter antacids and I believe every known prescription medication deemed safe for a child to use. Nothing has helped her.

tried eliminating things like dairy, soy, wheat, gluten? (i know this may be difficult, but may be very worth it in the end) my son completely slept through the night once i eliminated wheat/gluten from his diet.September 5, 2007 at 1:24 pm #42196Anonymous

InactiveKaelyn was a HORRIBLE sleeper. She’s still not a great sleeper, but she does sleep through the night 3 or 4 nights a week. The other nights, she only tends to wake up once or twice a night. So, it can get better.

InactiveJustice was the same way. I thought it was reflux, but finally realized it was just a matter of him getting so used to waking so much that he just kept doing it. Once I was sure he wasn’t in pain, I did some gentle sleep training. Basically I put him in his crib and everytime he got up I laid him back down. Once he would lay still for me I would rub his lower back in large circles. Also, I never tryed if he wasn’t really tired. That is the gist of it, but I think there was more to it.
Justice was a pretty hard case too, but the sleep training did the trick. Now he goes to bed at 7 or 8 pm and doesn’t wake until 4 or 5 am to eat and then goes back to bed until 6 or 7 am. It is really amazing from where we came from.Justice’smom2007-09-08 22:36:21

InactiveSo you think it may be habit? Because she is still throwing up quite frequently which means her reflux is still active.

InactiveSorry, I never got this. I think it is possible it is habit. The throwing up is not necessiarly a sign that she is in pain. Many babies still spit up and they are very well medicated. I think you would just have to watch her and see if you think she is in pain. I wish I could help more.

InactiveKaelyn was still actively spitting until about 13 months old, but her pain was managed around 9 months. We figured that she was comfortable because she was no longer screaming all of the time. We did sleep training at the time and it worked fairly well.
Of course, lots of nightwakings could definitely be related to reflux. About a year after we took Kaelyn off all meds, she started having lots of sleep issues. We put her back on meds and the sleeping improved significantly. So, there’s no definite answer. Sorry.

InactiveHi Kim,
How did you determine the allergies in your daughter? I think my daughter has food allergies but I have not been able to successfully determine them from an elimination diet (I am still breastfeeding). My daughter is 6 months old and she just started rice cereal. She has seemed to be in so much pain this week and so much worse, I’m wondering if she is allergic to rice. Thanks,
Carol -
