Inactivei know that most of you on this board have infants/toddlers with reflux. at 4 1/2 julianna still has reflux. i don’t want to discourage anyone (at 2 1/2 my boys seem to be doing fine!
a little mylanta here and there- but no prescription meds since 18 months!) but julianna has had in the past few weeks a full fledged reflux relapse.she is on axid. we had tried prevacid for her last year without success. my concern right now (and of course peds office is closed today- so please excuse my rambling rant) is that she has a very wet sounding cough. last night we were up from 12 am until 3 am with her b/c she was coughing so violently. it doesn’t sound like croup, she does not have any nasal congestion at all and is not bringing up any phlegm. she does not have a fever. this morning she coughed and then spit up a little in the trash can in the bathroom.
before starting her on the axid she was not sleeping at all (literally up every hour- walking down the hall and into my bedroom), she had hiccups many times throughout the day, she didn’t want to eat b/c she said that it hurt her belly and even the hygenist at the dentists office said that her breath smelled acidy during her check-up.
also, listed on the phamphlet from the pharmacy about the axid was that one of the side effects could be cough. she has been on axid for a week now. wouldn’t that have subsided as her body adjusts to the medication? also she was not coughing at all after the first few doses of axid, then maybe once or twice in the night but not enough to wake her like last night.
we’ve also eliminated all chocolate, citrus (she had been drinking low acid oj) and tomatoes from her diet.
any suggestions on where to go from here? any websites that have information about little kids and reflux? she is supposed to start pre-school on wednesday. i really had thought that once we figured out the lactose intolerance issue that she was fine. i am feeling discouraged that she might never outgrow this. and to add to this now she is terrified of the doctor. last year she had an endoscopy/colonoscopy which she vaguely remembers, but she does not like going to the GI and cries when we go to the ped. she fell in march and had to have stitches on her chin so any medical setting really freaks her out.
sorry to ramble on.
i guess i’m just having a bad day! September 4, 2006 at 2:34 pm #12919Anonymous
InactiveHave you tried tums instead of the mylanta. I know Laura uses them with Jonah and we were told we could use them as soon as Colt could chew them. I have severe acid reflux and I am on prevacid but when my reflux is real bad a couple of tums sure does help. At her age she would probably like the taste of them too. Maybe this can get you thru until tomorrow.

InactiveOh Laurie – I’m so sorry you and Julianna are going through this. I wish I had
advice – but only support and hugs. I hope things improve and she feels
better soon.

InactiveWhat about trying another PPI drug, like Proilsec or Zegerid instead of the Prevacid? I now these usually help more then the H2 blockers. I hope she gets reflief soon. HUGS

InactiveI am so sorry you (and especially Julianna!) are still dealing with this. I know you said the Prevacid did not seem to work for her but here is a link to the Prevacid kid’s website that does have information about reflux in children. Hope you can get it under control soon.

InactiveLaurie, I don’t have any helpful advice. I hope that you can find some help for her soon!

Inactivejust thought i’d give an update.
the ped said julianna has a sinus infection and is on omnicef and a prescription for her cough. the ped feels that the sinus infection came first and caused her reflux flare up. he’d like to keep her on the axid until she completes the omnicef, wait a few days, then take her off the axid and see what happens.
but i am wondering, could the sinus infection be a result of her reflux? i know with my boys they stopped getting ear infections when they stopped refluxing. while their reflux was out of control- even on prevacid- they were getting at least one or sometimes 2 ear infections a month.
it’s such a big confusing circle- what comes first? what causes what!! anyway she has been on the antibiotic for 4 days now and her cough does not seem to be getting any better. she is sleeping better though- but i think that the cough meds have something to do with that.
but she’s my little trooper. you’d never know that she has this going on. she’s all smiles and happy to be back at preschool with “the big kids!”

InactiveGood luck with the ped’s plan. It really is confusing trying to figure out what caused what. To me it seems more likely that reflux would have caused the sinus infection, but he’s the doctor so hopefully he’s right and she can come off of the Axid and be fine without it once the infection clears up.
I hope she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveLaurie So sorry to hear about Julianna, we are giving up on Axid for a trial of Zegegrid because Prevacid didn’t work for us either. But I will say that at first Kayleigh had a sporatic cough when we began Axid and it has subsided but this is now 6+mos later. Also, if Kayleigh is experiencing severe reflux due to cold, ears, sinus etc I’ve noticed that the Axid doesn’t seem to even be working at these times. It’s crazy! We use Tums smoothies in these times to try and help.
We are on Omnicef right now as well (ears again) and we have to space it 2 hours apart from the Axid. Were you told the same?
I’ve never been able to find much info on toddlers/preschoolers with reflux myself hopefully you will have better luck. Good to hear she’s enjoying being back in school with the “big” kids!

Inactivechristine- i agree with you. i really think it is more likely that the reflux led to the sinus infection, so we’ll see. although i love this ped (he can actually get the boys to sit perfectly still for an ear exam and a throat culture!) i find that when it comes to reflux stuff he blows it off. luckly, there is another ped in the practice who we see more often and she is always willing to listen to my thoughts- she just wasn’t in that day. but i think i might try. maybe he’s right! that would be a relief!
lynn- i’m keeping my fingers crossed for you that the zegerid works for kayleigh!
our ped told us to space out the axid and the omnicef as well, but when i picked up the omnicef and the prescription cough meds at the pharmacy i asked the pharmacist and he said it didn’t matter. just to be safe though i am listening to the doctor. i give the omnicef in the am, the axid w/ lunch and at bedtime. did the prevacid just not control kayleigh’s reflux or did she have side effects?

InactiveLaurie- Prevacid worked for her reflux she just wouldn’t eat and was losing weight. I think it was due to the 30 min wait time not necessarily to the drug itself. Which is why we are trying zegerid. I don’t know where to go next if this doesn’t help.
How funny about the omnicef……our ped said it shouldn’t matter yet the pharmacist said it did. Oh how I wish they would just come to an agreement on these things!
Hope Julianna is feeling better!

InactiveLaurie,
Is there any chance you can try zegerid? My son’s been on it over a year and his reflux is getting more manageable, yet is still there. He has a hiatal hernia, so his might never truly go away. We tried changing the zegerid dose earlier this summer (lowering it) with horrible results. I know what you mean about never getting over this. Have you taken ALL the reflux foods out of her diet, including mint, fizzy drinks, all citrus, onions, garlic….etc?
I also agree that it sounds totally plausible that the reflux caused the sinus infection…with all these fluids going everywhere especially while they are lying down to sleep it seems to make sense. Here’s a link to the old DISA site, which has great info on intoelrances and their effect and relationship with reflux. Do you think she could have an additional food thing going on? I’m just trying to think of anything that might be happening….
Hang on, now I can’t get the DISA to come up, I’ll try getting it later.
