… the not sleeping well, or the reflux?
We’re in the middle of a cross-country relocation, so Nate’s world has been in a bit of an upheaval. He and I are splitting our time between my parents in NJ, and DH’s temporary furnished apt in PA until we can get into our new home in about 1.5 weeks. His schedule has been deteriorating more and more each day it seems. He’s been sleeping horribly, and I’ve been babying him a bit more than usual due to the circumstances. He’s also cutting FOUR teeth!!!
I’ve been saying for 3-4 weeks now that his reflux seems SO much better. To the point where I’ve stopped the Zantac, and we’re just on Zegerid, and I’ve been thinking about weaning him of that too. However this morning he’s been refluxing A LOT. He gagged at least 5 times during b’fast and didn’t eat very much. He even gagged on yogurt, which he rarely if ever did even when his reflux was at its worst.
So I’m wondering … can poor sleep (+ teething) make reflux worse, or is it more likely that he’s not sleeping well BECAUSE he’s been refluxing??
March 8, 2006 at 8:51 am #3229AnonymousInactiveMy guess is that the teething is making the reflux worse and he’s not sleeping because of the teething and increased reflux.
Can you try giving him a little extra Zantac or Mylanta at night?
March 8, 2006 at 9:12 am #3236AnonymousInactiveTeething can definitely make reflux worse. My ped explained it that when the babies are teething they make more of the hystamine acids in their tummies. (there were a few kinds of acid, but I don’t remember all of that). That is why benadryl and such can help during the teething times for the pain and neutralizing the acid in the stomach.
Not sure if you have done Benadryl or not yet, but he is a year old, so I would ask the ped if it’s OK.
March 8, 2006 at 9:18 am #3243AnonymousInactiveKaren – You are probably right. You can be sure he will be getting some Zantac today!!
Ann Marie – I have never heard of Benadryl to help with teething. He actually had some a few days ago, b/c he got hives after eating a few bites of tuna fish. Honeslty, he didn’t sleep better that night than any other, but I’m willing to try anything twice!!
March 8, 2006 at 9:26 am #3246AnonymousInactiveOH teething! It ruins perfect schedules and makes reflux horrible! I hope he gets back to normal soon!
March 8, 2006 at 9:30 am #3248AnonymousInactiveI’ll bet he’s sleeping so bad because of the new teeth. Each and every tooth Hailey got caused all kinds of problems with sleep. The increased gagging and refluxing is likely from the new teeth too. Teething also gets reduces their appetite. Have you tried giving Motrin? This works the best for us. Be sure to give it every eight hours. It takes continuous use for it to really work. Tylenol does absolutely nothing it seems, although during bad teething episodes I’ve rotated Motrin and Tylenol throughout the day. I always make sure that I give Motrin right after her last meal/bottle of the day so it doesn’t upset her tummy.
March 8, 2006 at 9:43 am #3250AnonymousInactiveStacey – Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve been giving Tylenol, but you’re right, it doesn’t seem to be working. Will get some Motrin today. Also, at home I had a crib wedge under his mattress, but nothing here at my mom’s. I plan to put a folded up towel under the head of the mattress, maybe that will help a little too. Seems with Nate that no one thing does the trick, but I think that working a few “tricks” at once does seem to make things a little better.
It seems like these teeth are taking FOREVER to come thru. Grrrrrrrr.

March 8, 2006 at 9:46 am #3251AnonymousInactiveSharon ~ That’s the same for us. There is never one thing that helps but a combination of things. I think the Motrin will help. Is he sleeping in a crib? Could you put some books under the head to elevate it a bit? That’s hard though because it seems like they end up rolling down to the bottom.
It does take teeth forever. UGH!

March 8, 2006 at 10:21 am #3256AnonymousInactiveI HATE TEETHING!!!! Sometimes it feels like it can take forever. We’re at 9 months and still no teeth, but I think some may finally be on the way. I just find that sometimes it can be so hard to find out what’s actually causing the problem with these refluxers. Hailey has also been sleeping awfully these days, and I have no idea what is actually causing it- there are so many possibilities! I hope this all passes when his teeth finally break through.
March 8, 2006 at 10:29 am #3261AnonymousInactiveRobbie is doing the same thing. He is waking up and sounding hungry but he just chews on the bottle. Last night I said, enough, and gave him Motrin. Don’t even fool with Tylenol. Motrin is from heaven. He is also working on four teeth. Good luck with the teeth, and I hope you get some sleep soon!
SarahMarch 8, 2006 at 10:55 am #3270AnonymousInactivearound a year, hannah’s sleeping was a disaster, we think because of teething, but possibly because she had her first ear infection, which after rushing to the dr every other day thinking she had an ear infection, we refused to fall into this trap and voila! ear infection. no, really, sleeping was so bad, we had to go for long rides to help her fall asleep.
i am also responding to this, wondering where in PA you are moving? i am in havertown until the end of april and then we’ll be in kennett square…if you ever need an extra pair of hands, my email is jr carroll @ comcast.net (without the spaces).
March 8, 2006 at 7:40 pm #3322AnonymousInactiveHi Becky ~ You are so sweet! We will be in Collegeville, which I think is a little over an hour away from Kennett Square. It’s kind of by Delaware, right? Probably a little too far, but thank you so much for the offer.
March 9, 2006 at 7:33 am #3366AnonymousInactiveOMG, you all won’t beleive this. He got 11 — yes ELEVEN — hours of uninterrupted sleep last night! I was fully expecting him to wake when the Motrin wore off, but he slept right thru!!!! I also raised the head of the mattress with a folded up towel, and even that little bit must have helped.
Thanks all for your support and suggestions.
March 9, 2006 at 10:24 am #3384AnonymousInactiveYIPPEE!!!! We have that kind of luck with it too! I hope it continues!
March 13, 2006 at 12:35 pm #3706AnonymousInactiveWow! I need to try motrin. Jonathan is cutting all four molars right now and is just miserable! Tylenol isn’t helping us either. Thanks for the idea. Someone suggested giving both Tylenol and Motrin earlier in this thread. Do you give both at the same time or alternate? What is the advantage to using both medications?
I’m off to buy motrin!
