whooping cough??

Looking for some help from moms. Let me know what you think

Evie has had a cold for 2 weeks. Mostly clear but constant runny nose and a moderate cough. This is the longest she’s been sick, so I called my ped yesterday afternoon, and they told me that if it’s been 2 weeks I should come in. Last night and the night before, Evie had a minute long coughing fit and hardly breathed. It was wet and gurgly. She was gagging and threw up at the end (a little). She took a minute or two to recover.

The first night I didn’t think anything really and just thought she had a fit, but after it happened last night, I referred to my Dr. Sears baby book which totally sounded like she had whooping cough. Acts normal, no fever, fine in between coughing spells which can be frequent or only 1-2/day.

So, my ped implies that she can’t have whooping cough b/c she is vaccinated for it and says it’s likely red tide(a pesky algae from the ocean in florida that causes moderate to severe respiratory problems). My gut tells me it’s not red tide b/c we don’t live on the beachside (about 8 miles inland). Anyone have any experience, thoughts, etc???? BTW, she’s acting totally fine and Dr. told me to use whatever OTC meds are woking.

Gosh Katie.. I just don’t know. I can’t see I would even really recognize whooping cough unless it was really bad. And I”m totally unfamiliar with the red tide (from NC).

Any chance it’s an allergy response? Have you started any new foods lately? They can sometimes cause cold like symptoms????

It is RSV season here. Sometimes in children a little older, the symptoms of RSV can just be runny nose and an occasion cough which can be treated at home but sometimes they do progress to the temperatures and breathing difficulties. Alexis had RSV when she was 18 months and symptoms she had was runny nose and a barky cough mostly at night, I thought it was croup until I bought her in and she tested positive for it, fortunately we were able to treat it home and avoid the hospital.

AH! Why didn’t I think of that. Ben had it when he was 4 months old, and that’s what it was like exactly. Horrible cough, but not constant, but it would be hard for him to stop coughing once he got going. It was during the worst of his reflux too, so he always vomitted at the end of the coughing spell.

There is an easy test for RSV. Might ask about that, Katie.
