InactiveI haven’t posted for a while, because Brian was self feeding well, but he has refused to eat and to be feed since past Thursday, and he is gagging and vomiting again while he is able to eat some, I can’t believe this not eating nightmare is coming back again!!! I am sooo depress.
What makes him not wanted to eat? He was taking prevacid 22.5mg (15mg in am, 7.5mg in pm), I had decreased his am dose to 3/4 of 15mg since past Tuesday, could that be the reason? However, it has only been 3 days since I decreased his med, can his body react so quickly on such a small decrease in such a short period of time? I have increased his am dose back to 15mg since Friday, how long does it take before he will feel better again? He is 19 month now, why is he still have reflux? Can he be teething (cutting second molar)?
Sorry for all the question, I am so frustrated, I was thinking that we were off this reflux roller coaster!

InactiveThat sounds like a very low dose. Is it possible to get an increase in his dosage just to see if he will start eating again?

Inactivesome babies dont grow out of reflux until later than that….i would say to put him back on the full dose again for a while.
also, teething creates histamines which aggrivates reflux.

InactiveHey Sharon
Sorry to hear that things are difficult again… don´t know. It sounds to me like it could be teething or maybe he is getting sick? I mean Matthew still refluxes, he just does not cry and it does not hurt and there are times, when he is sick or teething that his reflux becomes out of control…i just don´t think that gagging and vomiting could come from lowering the meds dose… it is more like something is bothering him (Maybe the teeth) or something else and the stomach is acting up…

InactiveSharon, I’m so sorry that you are still going through this. Brian’s story was sort of like my source of inspiration for surviving this whole nightmare. It sounds like there can be a couple of things going on.
Firstly, it is possible (though doubtful) that it could be the meds, but I would first continue giving him the full dose since it’s the easiest variable to control. If that’s it, then he should go back to eating in a couple of days.
The other possibility is a reflux flare-up due to teething or just because. I don’t want to depress you, but I have heard of several people whose refluxers didn’t show symptoms from around 14-18 months, or for other long stretches, and then it suddenly reappeared (or I guess, more accurately, it was never really gone to begin with). You can try to give mylanta and see if that helps at all. Also, in case of teething, you can try to give motrin 30 minutes before a meal, and see if he eats any better. We went through that with Hailey about a month ago, and turns out it was the tooth, because the motrin brought her back to her baseline (which still isn’t great, I know) but it least it was her normal amount. I guess another possibility is an illness that’s brewing that hasn’t totally surfaced yet.
I also have a question- when is he gagging and vomitting? Is it when you’re feeding him purees, or when he’s feeding himself, or both? I’m asking because Hailey we’ve been on a feeding strike with Hailey lately, and our therapist seems to feel that it’s likely behavioural. She won’t let us get a spoon near her, and she seems to feel that’s Hailey rebelling against being babied.
Anyhow, good luck trying to muddle through it, and I hope it passes soon. HUGS!

InactiveThank you everyone for the reply. Brian had diarrhea three times yesterday, I don’t understand why it takes three days for the symptoms to show up, so now we are back to puree again for a while, I hope he can get better soon.

InactiveOh no. Hope the diarrhea passes soon.

InactiveMarisa is similar. We’ve started to figure out that she tends to go on an
eating strike a few days before a virus comes out in full force – and for her,
viruses and teething often go hand in hand. I hope Brian feels better and is
eating again soon.

InactiveLori and Karen, thank you.
I think Brian is teething too, because he refuses to chew any table food, he eats some puree, but when I touch his gum, I can’t feel the coming tooth. “What to expect the first year” says teething can cause diarrhea.

InactiveSarah always had nasty diarrhea with teething! We started to call it “teething poop” as it became quite a common occurence in our house.

InactiveLori – Does Hailey have diarrhea when she is teething? Brian never have diarrhea when he was teething, and he doesn’t have diarrhea today, I just can’t figure out what is the problem.

InactiveNo, Hailey doesn’t get it, but she tends toward constipation usually. Sarah, got it all the time!
