did anyone ever experience their baby not wanting the bottle due to teething?? i thought i heard it somewhere that it hurts their gums when the bottle rubs on them…
shane has been pushing the bottle away for the past couple of days.. he seems hungry, but just has a hard time drinking it. it doesnt seem like reflux, he isnt screaming, no archinig, and otherwise happy. sooo could it be?

Bryce is teething right now too, and he doesn’t want to eat anything (by mouth). He has a feeding tube, which is how we give him most of his food, but we always practice feeding him by mouth first. He’ll usually take a couple ounces, but he hasn’t been taking anything for the last few days. Just holds the milk in his mouth.November 19, 2006 at 5:06 pm #18420AnonymousInactiveAlso if they have any ear problems they will push the bottle away. Teething can cause their ears to hurt.
November 19, 2006 at 5:09 pm #18421AnonymousInactivemy son just chews on the nipple when he is teething.
could it be an ear infection? i know when they have those it hurts to suck.November 19, 2006 at 6:51 pm #18435AnonymousInactivemaybe, he has a cold as well.. just developed today.. and i noticed him grabbing at his ears today. but no fever.
can u have an ear infection w/no fever? and if its not because of teeth, can it be reflux w/o showing anyother times of being in pain or fussyness and w/o any screaming or crying, just pushing the bottle away and fighting me
November 19, 2006 at 7:06 pm #18437AnonymousInactivemy son had ear infections with no fever.
November 19, 2006 at 7:37 pm #18443AnonymousInactiveMy older son never had any pain or fever or any other sign of an infection when his ears were infected, I found out about his first one at his 9 month WELL baby visit, the doctor asked me if he had been cranky or pulling at his ears or had a fever, I said no, why? and she looked at me and said, well he has an infection so bad there’s pus in his let ear!!!!!!! (to this day the kid has a seriously high pain tolerance)-Aidan doesn’t get fevers either but he does get cranky.
November 19, 2006 at 8:15 pm #18446AnonymousInactiveMy babies have had ear infections with no fever.
Also, Myles often refused to eat, or just gnawed on the nipple when he was teething badly, or when he had an ear infection.
I’d say that if he is grabbing his ear and he has had a cold, an ear infection is a strong possibilty. Colds and URI’s often lead to ear infections. Although it usually doesn’t go to the ears that fast…but it’s probably worth checking out with the doctor if he’s not better soon.
I hope it passes soon.
November 19, 2006 at 9:52 pm #18460AnonymousInactiveCould be teething, an ear infection, or maybe his throat hurts or he’s just stuffed up from the cold. Sometimes they can’t breathe well so they don’t like the bottle. Can you try giving him a cold-med 30 minutes or so before you feed him and see if that helps? Good luck.
November 20, 2006 at 8:25 am #18492AnonymousInactiveohh i thought he was too young for a cold med..?? that is what the nurse said… what age did you give it to your daughters?
November 20, 2006 at 9:47 am #18494AnonymousInactiveI don’t know about how old they can be, sorry. Hailey didn’t have her first cold until she was a bit older. We’re also in Canada so the meds might be different. I think I gave it as long as they were over 4 months but best to check. Sorry.
November 20, 2006 at 1:04 pm #18511AnonymousInactiveok i just left the doctors… no ear infection, thank God. and yes he can have tylenol cold.. yay~
November 20, 2006 at 1:33 pm #18516AnonymousInactiveGood news! I’m glad to hear he doesn’t have an ear infection. I just got back with Myles, too. He was up crying half the night so I thought I’d better have his ears checked. No ear infection so it’s probably just teething.
About the Tylenol Cold, it can cause sleeplessness in some babies, so watch for that. My girls get really hyper from cold medicines so I stopped buying them. My friend’s daughter once didn’t sleep for 24 straight hours due to a dose of cold medicine. Of course, some babies do fine with them so it’s worth trying if it will make him feel better.
I hope Shane is feeling better and eating better soon.
November 20, 2006 at 5:02 pm #18544AnonymousInactiveGood luck. Hope it helps. Hailey gets worked up from dimetapp, but does well with tylenol cold. She’s generally pretty “sleepless” so it’s a tough comparison, but I’ve definitely noticed her become wired a few times after the dimetapp (but then again Sarah still runs around on an adult dose of ativan, so maybe it’s just my kids). Hopefully you won’t have that problem.
