InactiveHello moms–
I know I should never do this, but I’m comparing children……. Griffin was taking only one bottle at night when he was 1. Well, now that Owen is one, I’m not so much bothered by the fact that he takes a couple to 3 bottles per day, it’s that he won’t drink milk from a sippy cup very well. It’s usually a few sips here and there.
Daycare claims that he does really well for her, she writes down even the smallest details, like if he only takes sips of milk at a meal, etc so I believe that he does better for her than me.
He has been refluxing really bad a night and when he wakes up, I offer him a little milk or water in a cup, but he immediately throws a huge fit about it. I’m of course tired, so I give in and get a bottle. He takes a few sips maybe 2 oz. at most and back to bed. I don’t really want to wake up the whole family, but DH is gone this week and Griffin sleeps through it, so I was thinking maybe this is the week to say sippy cup or nothing? Am I being overly agressive??
He will take a nap without a bottle, but not the night time routine which is fine with me. He’s only 5-10% for weight, so I plan to give the nighttime bottle for awhile, I just don’t want to make the middle of the night bottle a habit………
What should I do??? Am I being to paranoid??

InactiveHey Erica,
Honestly… I would let him have the bottle.. he is still young. Shane is doing 3 bottles a day still..he is 16 mos. old. The only thing he will drink out of a cup is juice or water.. but only a few sips here and there. I dont feel like I need to rush him..
What i am doing is cutting back from 3 to 2 bottles soon.. and hopefully he will drink more water/juice during the day because he will be more thirsty. Then after he gets used to the cup.. I will probably put his milk in it.. and take the bottles away around 2 years old.
I know.. that sounds late.. but he loves his “baba” and its a way to get all his milk in him.
So.. thats just my opinion. I think there was another post on this a couple weeks ago or so.. you might want to look it up.
I also think if he is drinking all of his milk..and eating all of his food during the day .. i wouldnt give anything in the middle of the night. If i did give something.. maybe water. Maybe a cup with water in it. Just because it can turn into a habit REALLY fast. My neice is doing this to my SIL every night at 4 am.. and she is 2! I am curious to see what other moms have to say about this!!October 16, 2007 at 2:30 pm #44301Anonymous
InactiveIt took a LONG time for Claire to drink her milk out of a sippy too. Maybe try one that is more a bottle type.. like the soft Nuby ones?
That being said…. do you think he is refusing the milk because it is bothering him? You mentioned him refluxing a lot at night… are you sure the MSPI is resolved?October 16, 2007 at 7:57 pm #44329Anonymous
InactiveAlex loved water out of a sippy, but had no interest in anything else. We just kept offering her milk until she started drinking more of it. Then, she actually started drinking less and less formula as her milk intake went up. We just dropped her bottles less than a month ago.

InactiveThanks for making me feel a little better about this!
Naomi- I don’t think it’s a milk thing because he takes whole milk from a bottle anytime. He just hates the sippy cup with milk.He will take water from a cup great! The refluxing has been an on again off again thing, but it’s worse now, he’s had a cold for about 10-12 days so it’s been worse, only waking once at night if at all.Last night did go better though, instead of letting him cough and resolve it or see if he cried first, when the coughing started I took a sippy cup of milk into his room, he took 2-3 swallows and back to bed and slept the rest of the night and that was at about 11:30pm.We’ll see how tonite goes! I just am really bothered by him not wanting milk from a cup and I know it’s not that big of a deal, but Griffin just did so well with it and you know what happens with that second child COMPARE, COMPARE, COMPARE!!!!

InactiveI totally know what you mean about the comparing thing. I think it’s a bit easier for me since I have a boy this time around, so I don’t compare as much as I would if they were the same sex. I already knew that boys would be different, you know?
I would just keep offering it, and if you really want him off the bottle, maybe start putting less in the bottle, so that he is thirsty? That sounds mean, actually… hmmmm…but if he knows that the bottle is always an option, he will probably hold out for it, if he can.Glad that he did better last night. Colds certainly make life around here miserable too. Hope he feels better soon.October 17, 2007 at 2:59 pm #44370Anonymous
InactiveErica,
I wanted to tell you that my niece wouldn’t take milk from a sippy until she was 16months old. And when she first started milk her mom used to have to warm it in the microwave or she wouldn’t even take it from the bottle…. I know strange. -
