I posted in another section how Hailey’s been doing awful lately. Really sounding congested, gurgly, choking many times throughout feeds, burping up all day long. I’m starting to really worry.
Tonight she kept wet burping and choking on it as it came back down. It finally led to the most heartbreaking vomitting episode I’ve ever seen… she just couldn’t get it out, and kept wretching and screaching. It was so sad.
I know that prevacid doesn’t reduce the amount of vomitting, but it’s just odd that this coincides with a time where she’s not on meds. We can’t get the capsules in her, and we’re waiting for an order of CaraCream. For the two weeks before, she was also getting a subtherapeutic dose. Is it possible that it’s because she’s not on meds? I know that PPIs only stop acid production, but does no acid mean less volume in the stomach and less vomit? We are just so puzzled by this. She really hasn’t sounded so awful since she was a month old, before being diagnosed. I don’t know what’s going wrong.

Plus, with the Prevacid, when she spits up, it probably is not painful. Without, the acids are hurting as she spits up, leading to worse choking episodes.
I hope you can get her back on the Prevacid SOON. I know some people have used Mylanta, you may try that in the interim. Has she ever had a video swallow? It most likely is from the lack of Prevacid, but if after being back on it for a few weeks, she still has some of these symptoms, you may want to rule out aspiration via video swallow. Take care!

March 16, 2006 at 3:34 pm #4021AnonymousInactiveMy assumption would be its because she is not on meds. Not to mention, when meds like PPI’s are stopped immediately without weaning, the stomach produces even more acid initally. I think the doc called it “rebound”.
When I had reflux really bad a couple years back I was put on Prevacid and then Nexium. I asked the doc how reducing the stomach acidity was going to prevent stuff coming back up the esophagus. He explained that when stomach acid is low, it causes the esoph spincter to strenghen. I dont know how true this is, but in my case, I had less choking/regergitating/burping episodes when I was put on a PPI. I hope you can get meds into her soon. I’m sure she will feel alot better.
March 16, 2006 at 3:35 pm #4022AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. We just got the CaraCream today, so hopefully things will be better for her soon.

March 17, 2006 at 10:49 am #4075AnonymousInactiveHow is it going with the caracream? Hopefully well!
March 17, 2006 at 11:28 am #4082AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. We just got the CaraCream yesterday, and she got her first dose of meds last night. Thankfully a bit less wretching, gagging, choking, and no outright puking, though still Sandifer’s and tons of wet burps. I expect a bit of a wait period for things to settle down.
