InactiveThis is more of a venting post, but I thought it belonged in this category.
My son had surgery Wed. for a hernia repair (doing fine). Well, since the people at CVS are complete idiots (long story) I wasn’t able to bring Zegerid with me. So, I figured he would just have to go the day without it for the day if they didn’t have it at the hospital. Well, after everything that went on that day I honestly forgot about the medication, I was more concerned with arguing with the nurse that his head needed to be more elevated than they were making him. They just couldn’t understand why and that he hasn’t slept flat since he was 2 months old. Hated that nurse!
Anyway, when the night nurse came in she came in around 9 pm with his tyenol and another syringe. It was prilosec. She said they didn’t have the meds he normally takes. I was fine with them giving him prilosec, atleast it was somthing. However, the doctor ordered 10mg. I asked how many times will he be given it and was told just once. I said, “that’s not good”. I told her that he takes 8 mgs 3 times a day. She told the doc and of course, he refused to authorize it. I was pissed, as much as I loved this doc, he’s a urologist, not a GI.
So, that was just the start of it. She was just giving him it at a “time” didn’t cooridinate it with a feeding at all. She asked what was the best way I felt to give it to him. When I told her that he would probally spit most of it out that she might want to do several small syringes she asked how I gave it at home. I told the med he takes can be given in formula. She called the pharmacist and he said it could be put in 1 oz. of formula. I knew that wasn’t true, but after the day we had I was done arguing.
I can’t believe just how many medical professionals prescribe the wrong amounts of meds and give the wrong dispensing directions!

InactiveSorry the nurse and doctor were so unhelpful but glad the surgery went well! Best wishes to Connor for a speedy recovery.

InactiveOMG, Kristen! I hear your frustration. Yesterday I went through a similar experience about medicating Hailey during her EEG. Finally I just gave up. Today, I had the pharmacist call me for the umpteenth time regarding our new solutab prescription… first time- does she have any allergies b/c there are lots of inactive ingredients in there… second time- is the script for a week or a month… third time- do I know to take it right before a meal… fourth time- her dose is high for her weight… fifth time- (again) does she have any allergies… sixth time- do I know that the solutabs can’t be split in half ……AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! What is wrong with these people. You’d think that medical professionals would know about these things! I also can never figure out what it is about PPIs that make people so uninformed about how to give them? It’s baffling!
Anyhow (didn’t mean to hijack and vent in YOUR vent
)…. I’m really glad that your son’s operation went well. Was it a hiatal hernia, or the other kind (I noticed that you said a urologist). How is he feeling today?June 16, 2006 at 10:39 pm #9951Anonymous
InactiveLori,
Feel free to vent!!!!
It was a hernia that begins with an “i” lol It was in his scrotum and pelvic area. It was so stressful, he said that it would take an hour and he would put a little scope in to see if there was one on the other side, if there was it would be an hour and a half, an hour and 45 minutes tops. By 2 hours I was freaking out. It actually took 2 1/2 hours.
Apparently the hernia was so big that they had to be very meticulous about pulling all the tissue away from it. Then, once they took care of the hernia they also had to drain his hydra-seal. After all was said and done they realized that his testicle never dropped, so they took care of that too!
I’m glad they did it all in one shot. My ped originally recommended a ped surgeon, but when I asked for referrals from a local group I belong to several mentioned this urologist. I’m glad I went that route because I don’t know that a general surgeon would have taken care of anything.
Anyway, Connor is fine today. It’s amazing how fast these babies recover. I had a hernia repair 2 years ago, it was so small, like a pen point, and it took 3 weeks to recover. He was in some pain yesterday but back to his normal self today!

InactiveI’m glad to hear he’s feeling better today Kristen. I do think they bounce back faster than we do.

InactivePoor little guy. I hope his pain is gone soon. And darn those doctors and nurses
I swear hospitals are the most dangerous places on earth. At least they gave him too little med at the wrong time instead of too much of something or the wrong med. I’ve heard of that happening too many times and I would never leave my kid alone in a hospital for a SECOND because of it. I’m glad he’s home and all “fixed up” and back on his Zegerid.
