InactiveHi all,
I just wanted to first say thank you to all of you for your guidance and suggestions as I come to terms with understanding the whole MSPI/reflux issue of my son. You all have been such a great support and I hope once I get a better handle on it that I can help someone also.
My son was put on Alimentum on Friday and just went to all Alimentum today and he is on 7.5mg Prevacid in the morning and 3.75mg at night. Prior to this he was always stuffy, had horrible night-wakings, was refusing all foods, gagging and shuddering with solids, had a rash and horrible blow-outs after each meal. As of today, he is eating like a champ (42 oz and 6 oz of solids), no more blow-outs but he still has the night-wakings, very dry skin, bit congested but definitely better and a little shuddering with his bottles. Will it take time for the rest of the issues to go away or do you think Neocate is in order? Also, do you think the night-wakings could be do to needing a full 7.5 mg Prevacid at night? I am supposed to email the doc on Friday to give an update but was wondering what you all think.
Thanks so much.

InactiveOH, he is 6mths old and weighs between 18 and 19 pounds depending on the scale you put him on.

InactiveI would definitely give the Alimentum at least 2 weeks before worrying
about a possible change to Neocate. It takes time to get all the milk
proteins out of his system. Actually, since he’s 6 months (meaning been
on other formula some time), you may want to give it even longer. But yes, he definitely may need a full 7.5 mg at night – which even
then still sounds like a low dose for his weight. So my suggestion
would be to push for the 7.5 at night and keep with the Alimentum for
at least 2 more weeks.Glad he’s starting to feel better though!

InactiveI’m glad to hear that the changes have helped your son feel better already! Kaelyn had eczema issues for most of her life until we discovered her milk allergy. After we cut all allergic foods out of her diet, it still took close to a month for her rash/eczema/dry skin to clear up. As Karen said, if he’s had 6 months for milk proteins to build up in his system, it may take a while for them all to get out.
As for the prevacid, Kaelyn was on 7.5 in the AM and in the PM. Right around 7 months (I think, my memory is a little hazy), she started having major issues with night wakings. We increased the PM dose to 15 mg (for a total of 22.5) and the night wakings went away. So, it’s definitely possible that he needs the night time dose to be higher. If your doctor is opposed to that, it may be worth it to try switching the doses, and do the higher one in the evening.

InactiveThanks ladies. We just added the extra dose in the evening on Friday and the doc actually wrote the script for 7.5 in the morning and 7.5 in the evening but wanted to try the smaller dose first so I think she has every intention of upping it if it doesn’t work. Thanks for letting me know about hte exzema taking so long. did anyone else deal with congestion?

InactiveWe never lost the congestion or eczema. Both ped and ped gi said that this is not anything to worry about. They say this may become an enviromental allergy thing. I am glad that Ryan is feeling much better!

InactiveI would try 7.5 mg at night and see if that helps, especially if he seems uncomfortable or in pain when he wakes.
As for the dry skin, all three of my children have it and with all three it improved as they got older regardless of their diets. They all had excema in infancy and seemed to get worse with dairy products for the first few months, but that seemed to resolve for all of them by 6 months. However, they all still get flare ups when they are bathed too frequently or if I use certain laundry soaps or fabric softeners. My doctors have told me to avoid fabric softener, and bleach and to use only free and clear laundry soaps. Also, I use dove bar soap (unscented) on all of them, even the baby. It helps alot. Try not to bathe him every day. I love to give my all my children a bed time bath every night, but it really does dry their skin out terribly.
As for nasal congestion, my first two had it on and off for months. For my first born it was definitely a dairy issue, but with my second child I never figured out what it was and she just outgrew it.
