InactiveHi Everyone,
My ds just turned 9 months old and weighs 16 pounds even. We have not had success with Prevacid so we are switching to Zegerid. We got the 40 mg packets and the doc prescribed 10 mg/twice a day. The marci kids site says 6-9 mg three times a day. Which way should I do it?
Also, I understand I will need to give Mylanta with the dose, which could add up to 6 mls of Mylanta a day. Is this too much for a baby to get EVERYDAY?
Also, the gi doc prescribed Carafate but I have been unable to time it properly. Is is OK to give both Carafate and Mylanta?
Thanks so much for your help!

InactiveHi Rekha!
You’ll want to do it three times per day to get the best coverage.
My advice is to email Dr. Phillips, as I know he has given different directions about dosing with the 40mgs packets/mylanta. And, he’ll let you know exactly how many mgs your ds should be getting per time.
He is very helpful and is always happy to answer questions. We used the 40mg packets for about 6 months, it can get tricky when you need to make dose adjustments.

InactiveThanks Jenay!
Did you see good results with the Zegerid?
Also, would you happen to have Dr. Phillip’s email address? I know I’ve seen it somewhere on this site!
Thanks!

InactiveRekha:
My Abby has been a Zegerid user since she was 1 month old and we LOVED it!! Worked quickly and very well. She is now 1 year and 1 month old and we are down to just 1 evening dose of 12 mg. I wish I could help you with the 40mg dosing questions, but Abby was on the 20mg packets and I never figured out the whole mix with Mylanta thing. Dr. Phillips should be able to help you out. Good luck!!

InactiveExcellent results! We noticed results within a week. You will probably have to work through the loose stools caused by the Mylanta for the first few weeks, but don’t let that scare you away.
I am looking back through my things and I noticed that Evan was on 3ml (12mgs) 3x daily for a total of 36mgs per day. That is what it eventually took to get him feeling comfortable. You may want to look into increasing her dose if your Dr. will let you? See what Dr. Phillips suggests.
Good Luck!

InactiveThanks again for the address and info.
I just heard back from Dr. Phillips and he says to give ds 12 mg three times a day with an equal part of Mylanta, so 9 mls of Mylanta a day. That is much more than what the Marci kids calculator suggests for the Zegerid…any thoughts on why he would suggest such a high dose? Also, what do I do if ds starts having loose stools from the Mylanta…just keep on giving the dose?
Also, Jenay this is the same dose your son was on (36 mg a day)…but do you remember what Evan’s age and weight was at that time? My ds is 9 months and 16 pounds.
I’m excited and nervous to give Zegerid a try and I appreciate all of your help!

Inactivemy son started on 36 mg of zegerid a day, and eventually required 60 mg a day to remain pain free. it was absolutely ridiculous, and it was related to the 40 mg packets buffer issues.
as for the mylanta, my son was very gassy from it and Dr Phillips suggeseted we use Tums instead, and it was fine.
i ended up switching to prevacid with caracream, which is also made my Dr Phillips. it doesnt have the buffer issues like 40 mg packs of zegerid have, so my son remains on 30 mg of prevacid right now.

InactiveWe LOVE Zegerid…it helped Addy so much. I would give it 3 times per day. Like others have said, email dr phillips and he should have some good advice for you…don’t be surprised if his answer is short and to the point…thats just the way he is but he’s a wonderful guy! He helped us sooooo much! Good luck!

InactiveHi Rekha-
I was guessing that he’d recommend 3mls of Zegerid + the 3mls of Mylanta 3x daily. That is what we did for 6 months and it worked fine for us. We started that at 7weeks old and I believe 11lbs. Of all the research and threads I have read, that dose seems in line with your son’s age and weight. (maybe some others can support me on this.)
If and when you increase your ds up to 3.5mls per dose, you’ll no longer need to buffer with the Mylanta. As far as the info on the Marci Calculator goes, that seems to always be off when calculating the 40mg packets, I don’t have a good answer for you on that.
If you ds is 9 months old, I am guessing you are onto baby food or some solids by now. That should help with the loose stools, just pay attention to what you are giving him. (NO PRUNES) Evan was strictly on Alimentum when we started with the Mylanta. The Alimentum caused loose stools for him anyways, so we weren’t surprised by the issue from Mylanta. Your son may do just fine.
I hope this helps some.

InactiveRekha, make sure to space out the carafate from the PPI. I can’t remember the exact reason why.

InactiveThanks again!
We are starting Zegerid tonight…..crossing my fingers that it works! The reflux has created a feeding aversion in my ds…so he refuses baby food and basically takes no solids. So I am really hoping his discomfort will be helped by Zegerid and he will begin to enjoy food for the first time ever. Will keep you all posted and thanks again for all the great help!
