Zegerid questions…..

[Anonymous]

I’m curious for those of you who are giving Zegerid 3 times per day, what

times do you give it? It is so difficult to give it to Isaac, he hates the taste

so much…. that I can’t figure out a good way to do it 3 times per day. If

we spaced it out to be every 8 hours… one would fall in the night while he

is sleeping (or supposed to be) and then it would be such a process and

he would be all wound up.

I’m also curious if people are giving it before or after meals….. I found

that if he eats right after, he vomits, but if we wait some time, he is ok. Is

it ok if we gave it like a half hour or so after he eats, but then he doesn’t

eat again for another couple of hours???

thanks

We mix Abby’s in with one ounce of formula and we give it to her at 6am, noon/1:00, and 6/7pm. Those times seem to have worked the best for us. We used to try waiting until 8/9 pm but sometimes we saw some breakthrough reflux so we moved up the dose time and things have been good since. After the ounce with the Zegerid in it, we then procede and give her another bottle with the rest of her feeding.

If you have any other questions, just ask – I’d be happy to help out

Hi Robyn. You don’t have to space it out every 8 hours and it is also not dependent on food. I think they say to wait around 4 hours between doses. I don’t have Emma on any certain schedule, and she takes it both before and after meals. I give it to her after she wakes up, sometime in the afternoon, and then right before she goes to bed. If he does just fine with it after he eats then I would continue to do it that way, it doesn’t hurt the effectiveness of the med at all. Thats the great thing about this med, however you can get him to take it will be just fine! btrue2006-6-7 9:47:12

So you haven’t seen any breakthrough with Abby during the night then? I

wanted to do a schedule like that….. but I was worried then that it would

be too long overnight to go from like 6 until 6…. although I guess we are

doing that now anyways.

Do you use the mylanta too? I wondered if there was some breakthrough

during the night if I could use that b/c I heard it tastes better and then

maybe wouldn’t be such an ordeal to give it to him. He usually wakes up

at like 3 or 3:30 to eat…..

Thanks!!!!

Not a bit of breakthrough – she has been sleeping through the nite since she was 2 months old (started the Zegerid when she was a bit over 1 month old). Haven’t needed to use anything else to keep it controlled.

How much Zegerid is Isaac on? I know having the right dose is CRITICAL in the success of these types of medications. http://www.marci-kids.com has a huge amount of info on Zegerid and correct PPI dosing. If you haven’t checked it out, you should definitely do so. You could also email Joel at the University of Missouri (where Zegerid was developed) to seek his input andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu. He is a genius when it comes to knowing dosage and other info.

Please keep me posted on how it is going

Oh goodness, I’m certainly no genius. I’ve just applied the formula a few times and I have the resources I need at my fingertips.

The others are right, you can give it whenever will work for you in regard to mealtimes. However, it is most effective when given on an empty stomach, I think mainly because more of it gets absorbed and it goes to work more quickly.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions: andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu.

I give it to my twins between 6 and 7 in the am, 7 pm and than again between 9 and 10. My twins are in daycare so they can’t get meds there. They end up eating between 4 and 4:30, get home about 5:30 and don’t eat again till 7, than between 9 and 10. It’s the only way I can fit 3 doses in.

I’m actually starting to get worried about fitting them in because they are starting to sleep longer. My daughter ate at 7 last night, than fell asleep about 8:30, so she didn’t get her final dose. She woke up at 5, so she had her am one there.

Joel, when you jump on here again, any advice for me? I’m worried that they are moving towards that sleeping 7-7 stage. If that’s the case I don’t know how I will ever get the meds in them. If I syringe it atleast half of it comes out of their mouth, espeically my daughters, so I put it in formula. But, if they aren’t hungry, they won’t open their mouth, so waking them won’t work.

Kristen,

That sounds like a tricky situation and I’m not quite sure what to tell you. You could try just giving them a higher dose 2 times a day and see if they are covered by that. If that doesn’t work, we could try to figure out something else.

So for Connor that would be: 6 mL 2x/day

And for Kaylee: 4.5 mL 2x/day

According to Dr Phillips, the 3 doses per day thing is just as important as getting the right amount per dose, so I’m hesitant to steer anyone to less than that. But if TID dosing doesn’t work for you, then you have to go with what does work. I hope this helps.

On the mylanta question. I used mylanta sometimes in the middle of the night if Emma woke up crying (or zantac). However I only did that when she was not on a proper dosage of Zegerid. It works great but I just noticed she wasn’t waking up crying when she was taking the PPI at what Dr Phillips recommends. If she woke up crying it was b/c of something else. I use mylanta primarily now for her gas (works wonders).

Kristen:

Isn’t it just terrible that we have to worry about how to get the medications into our kids because they are sleeping TOO MUCH??? (thank God for Zegerid!!!!!) I would be in a similar situation but fortunately my daycare does give medications so Abby can get it during the day. Are you in a situation that you could go to the daycare and give it to your kids yourself, perhaps a lunch break? Would your place of employment let you take off for a little while to run to your daycare just to give it to them? Just a thought – of course, I live in small town America where it only takes about 10 minutes to go completely across town.

Hi Robin,

That’s a great idea, but just not doable. I work in a different county and my husband works in a different state. So that’s just not possible. I’ve been thinking about sending in two premade bottles each day (she makes the formula there) put the zegerid in them and say, these are extra, just give them to them. I don’t know.

Sleeping to much, who would have thought! My son went to sleep at 10 last night, it is now 9:30 and he is still asleep!

I was going to suggest putting it in their daycare bottles. Is there a law that says babies can’t be given meds in daycare in your state? Or is it just her policy? Does she have to prepare the bottles, or can you send premade bottles instead? I’m sure you have a right to make your babies’ bottles and if you put meds in them, shouldn’t that your right also?

[Anonymous]

In New York you now have to be licensed to give meds. She used to be able to give meds and she has no problem doing it, but she’s not licensed. She wants to get licensed but all the courses so far have been during the week, which means she would have to shut day care down for a day. She’s waiting for a Saturday course.

I’m going to ask about the bottles. In the beginning I suggested not doing bottles because it’s a home based daycare and I don’t want to take up her entire fridge with bottles.

Boy, things have changed since I left NY. I grew up on Long Island. Moved away in 1992. Hopefully she’ll get her course done soon. This can’t be easy for parents whose babies need meds. I hope you find a way to make it work.
