InactiveWe are currently using mylanta supreme for the additional buffer for the 40mg zegrid packages. I think the mylanta is causing some constipation, I guess 10% of peple get constipated from mylanta due to the calcium..are there any alternatives to the mylanta for the additional buffer that is needed. Also, my son gets 12mgx3 per day, so maybe he does not neet the additional buffer?????

InactiveI have heard of people using TUMS? I don’t really know much about the whole buffer thing though.

InactiveYes, I have also heard of people using TUMS b/c the mylanta caused too much tummy trouble (usually diarrhea). Hopefully someone else will chime in on how much to use, etc…Just wanted you to know that there are other options! Good luck!

InactiveWhen I used Tums for Kate’s buffer with Zegerid, I used equal amount of tums as the suspension. I would dissolve half a tablet in 4mls of water and use whatever I needed. We used the smooth dissolve tablets. I stopped using it b/c Kate HATES the taste of it I guess and when I would use it it was IMPOSSIBLE to get her to take it but it’s worked well for some moms here I know! In fact Naomi(Bensmama)was the one who so sweetly suggested it!!! It worked great for awhile b/f she started refusing it. Anyway, I’m rambling. I hope this helps a little!!

InactiveI have also heard that tums are just as good. The amount you must give to keep from using a buffer is 14mg per dose. I only know that because Colt was on such a high dose that I asked Dr. Phillips about it and that is what I was told. I really wish they would fix the whole problem so that you wouldn’t have to use anything extra. Hope that helps.

InactiveYep, we use Tums for some of Ben’s doses of Zegerid. However, if you think that it’s the Calcium causing the constipation, then Tums might not be the answer because it is the main antacid ingredient in the Tums… Maybe email Dr. Phillips and see if there is another alternative?
Oh, and Claire, I’m sorry to hear that the Tums aren’t working for you anymore. You know, we end up throwing out all the orange flavored ones in the bottle because Ben won’t take them. Picky little ones, aren’t they?
