InactiveSarah came down with a cold last Sunday. Like everything else with her personality…she had exaggerated symptoms (she doesn’t cry, she screams…she doesn’t smile, she squeals…
) We ended up taking her to the emergency room clinic on Monday evening. Neither DH or I (both teachers) could afford a day off so close to Christmas. Anyway, they prescribed her Amoxicillian and Zyrtec. She has had EXPLOSIVE diarrhea the past 3 days. Anyone else experienced that with zyrtec? She’s been on amox. before without the diarrhea…that’s why I’m leaning towards zyrtec as the culprit?
It’s funny b/c a week ago I was looking for CONSTIPATION remedies (never tried any) and now I have the opposite problem. I can’t find the info that came with the medicine…probably threw it away…so I don’t know if diarrhea is a symptom good or bad…
And OF COURSE now she has a killer diaper rash to go along with it all. Other than the diarrhea though she feels MUCH better.

Just curious!

Inactiveim assuming the zyrtec was rxed for runny nose symptoms?
maybe ask the doc if you can use benadryl instead-thats what i used.
or does she even still need an antihistamine? does she still have a runny nose-sneezing without it?

InactiveShe still has a runny nose/sneezing, but the main (good) thing is she can sleep now. I only plan to keep her on the zyrtec another few days. Benadryl never seems to work well for us. Maybe I’m giving a high enough dosage…but it never does the trick. The zyrtec works great…I just didn’t know about the diarrhea and if that was causing it or not.

InactiveI have two theories based on my experiences with my three:
1. It’s the amoxicillin…even though it didn’t effect her that way in the past. Myles used to be consitpated much of the time and NOTHING gave him diarrhea…not even a super high mega dose of antibiotics. Now he’s outgrown his problem with consitipation, so I think if he were on an antibiotic he’d probably get diarrhea. Also, she may be on a higher dose than she was previously.
2. This is discouraging and I hope not the case…she may have picked up a stomach virus at the hospital. They are rampant this time of year. My whole family has been sick with it for almost a week now (not all of us at the same time, thankfully). Usually you can tell if it’s a virus by the distinctly disgusting odor. (My house needs to be fumigated at this point).

Of course, diarrhea and constipation are the most common side effects of just about all medications so it could be the Zyrtec. Ellie was on it for a few months with no problem, but all kids are different.
Myles has the killer diaper rash as well. Karen (marisa’s mom) often posts this link and we just ordered some. http://www.pinxav.com I wish I would have ordered some before to keep on hand.
Hope Sarah’s feeling better soon.

InactiveHmmm, her dirty diapers are ATROCIOUS and very very watery. She leaked through 3 outfits at daycare today. What other symptoms would there be to a stomach virus? I haven’t checked her temp, but she has been refluxing a lot (I can see/hear it) but thanks to Zegerid, she’s not mad about it. She’s spit up a lot today too. Hmmm, now you’ve got me wondering.
I was very careful not to let her touch anything at the hospital…and trust me it was hard to keep a recently mobile baby off the floor for two hours while we waited. She never touched the table, chairs, floor or any other surfaces…but I realize that doesn’t mean anything…
She’s also been very gassy (and her gas smells like her dirty diapers).
Also, I have been giving her zyrtec to her at night and it is such a strong sweet grape flavor. She has been struggling (no I have been struggling to get her) to finish her medicine bottles. I just figured it was like mixing toothpaste and orange juice or something and she didn’t like the two tastes combined. She takes her morning zegerid ok (all mixed with 1oz formula) but it’s her night medicine bottle (right after zyrtec) that she hasn’t been liking lately. So many questions!!!
I think I have decided that tonight will be the last dose of zyrtec. We’ll continue with the amox. until Monday. It was only a month ago that she had amox. last time so the dose is the same. However, it was from a different pharmacy this time and a different flavor. (tastes like strawberry this time?) Maybe THAT’S the problem?
Again…soooooooooooo many questions! Grrrr!

InactiveIf it smells atrocious I can almost guarantee you it’s rotavirus or another stomach bug. I’m in the same boat. It sucks. Myles had one bm today that leaked clear up to his neck, down to his ankles and was dripping down his high chair. This is only his second day of it and he’s losing weight and he’s parched, but thank God not dehyrated. I’m pretty sure we got it at church, but who knows? You can get it anywhere. We did some reading and evidently this virus can live 5 hours on someone’s hands and for days on surfaces. We human beings are pretty defensiveless when it comes to viruses.

As for other symptoms usually there’s a low grade fever, possibly some vomitting, and fatigue. Dizziness and light headedness, but a baby couldn’t tell you that. Myles had a fever the first day, but none since. And he only threw up twice. Since then it’s just horrid smelling, watery diarrhea.
Virus or not the important thing with diarrhea is to try to keep her hydrated. Probably get some Pedialyte or Gerber Liquilites. I’ve been giving Myles nothing but rice milk and rice cereal (and liquilites) these last two days trying to control the diarrhea and keep him hydrated. I think we’re keeping him out of the danger zone, but only barely.
Well I’m off to do yet more laundry. It’s been a lousy week. I hope Sarah’s better soon. Our poor babies.

InactiveMaybe they caught it through us- a computer gastro virus so to speak- because Alana had it as well
. I initially thought the formula refusal was the change to pepti-junior- but after giving it to her flavoured and unflavoured and her still only taking a few ounces I wondered. Then yesterday- the explosive, smelly (I think i am going to vomit myself thinking about it
) soak through her clothes through to my clothes diarrhea sealed the deal- its gastro!!!!not gastroreflux but gastroenteritis!! So we are supplmenting with gastrolyte as well at the moment (the nurse also said I could give 50mls lemonade in 200mls water if she got sick of the gastrolyte). She hasn’t been vomitting though, which doesn’t seem to be as much of a diagnostic criteria as the smelly (master of understatement
) diapersI have had a bit of a rumbly stomach myself- but no diarrhea- the nurse said that whilst I might be able to fight the bug, Alana’s system wouldn’t thats why she is the only one in the family refusing her food (no trouble with me
particuarly when the chocolate comes out).the gastro hypothesis seems as good as any!
