InactiveIan’s schedule is as follows;
6:30 wake and prevacid
7am 8oz Elecare(takes 45min)
8:20am fruit 4oz
9am nap
10:30 wake
11:00 8oz (never takes 8 but we try)
1:30 nap
3:30 wake and 4oz veggie
4pm 8oz (never takes but try again)
6:15pm prevacid
6:45pm 8oz
Bed
I’m just frustrated because we’re trying to reintroduce rice to get rid of one of hte bottles that he hates-it literally takes 1 hour to eat 4oz sometimes except for first and last bottle. Feeding clinic wants us to stick with four bottles because he’s not on enough foods like grains or protein, but how do we do that if he’s too full to eat. He doesn’t like the texture of rice and that’s a problem but more then anything he hates his 8:20 feed because he wants to play and isn’t hungry. Now with rice texture trials-he just gags and then refuses everything ( he would eat purees at that time before but never seemed to love it). Any ideas on scheduling? I need help!
Thanks!!

InactiveTracy,
Sorry I don’t have much advice. I have problems with Myles, too becaue he hates the bottle and won’t take a sippy cup either. I can’t get enough fluid into him and he eats too much cereal because the only way I can get any breast milk or formula into him is to mix it with some cereal and spoon feed him. It’s frustrating because I think if he would drink more fluids he would have an easier time moving his bowels. His doc said less bulk (cereal) would help but what do I do if he won’t drink anything whatsoever?
So, while Myles problem is different I understand the daily frustration of not being able to get your child to eat or drink what he needs.
Have you tried making his cereal really, really thin; like gruel? (That’s what my mil calles it). I make Myles’ cereal with 1/4 – 1/3 cup of oatmeal mixed with 4.5 ounces of breast milk. It’s very thin, just enough texture to help me spoon feed it to him. Maybe Ian would take it that way becaues he may hardly notice the texture. Later on you can gradually increase the amt of cereal as he gets accustomed to it.
I wish I had better ideas for you, but I’m still scratching my head over here with my own little boy!
How’s Ian feeling?

InactiveHi again,
Forgot to add…..maybe give him smaller amt. in his bottles so he’ll be hungrier. Myles never drank an 8 ounce bottle in his life and neither did either of my two girls.

InactiveWell, he wants to be happy but lots of moaning. Kind of on edge. We’ve been able to fend off diarrhea so far but I think he’s got belly aches from the antibiotic-has alot of gas and won’t drink his bottles at all-like 2oz -down from 6 and that was WITH the ear infection. So basically ear is probably feeling better but tummy is in pain. I really want to stick with the rice but maybe I should cool it until antibiotic is over. Am sticking with probiotics as well but they could be adding to the issue who knows.
I’m thinking maybe do 3 bottles for a couple of days and see if it helps?? Can always go back right? Or is that too hard to switch back?
That’s great that Myles takes formula like that from a spoon-I don’t think Ian will-he just really has bad associations with Elecare and it ends up getting all over him and not in his mouth.

InactiveTracy,
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea; waiting on the rice for now. His tummy may be very uncomfortable from the antibiotic. Hopefully once he’s done with that he will be more willing, or at least you’ll know his tummy is not upset from the medicine.
There are always so many darn variables to weigh and consider. Like with Myles. I want to start him on Carnation Good Start since my breast milk supply will only last another 6 weeks or so and the soy is probably too constipating. But I want to give him some juice, too. And try new foods. And maybe gradually reduce his Prevacid at some time. But you can’t do it all at once and if you do one thing at a time you’ll be trialing something while they are on their way off to Kindergarten! It’s hard to know what to do first.

What do you mean about bad associations from Elecare? Isn’t that what he drinks from his bottle?
3 bottles a day may be a good idea too. Especially if he doesn’t really like them anyway.
I wish I could be more helpful. Hope Ian is feeling all better soon.

InactiveSorry about his upset tummy…
I’d definitely try dropping to three bottles – he may take as much (or
almost) that way – I think it’s odd of them to be so insistent on four
bottles. And I know that 24 ounces is preferred at his age but I think
he’d do just fine with less – he’s getting plenty of nutrition from his
banana, squash, etc as well. I’d probably merge the 11am and 4pm
bottles and see if that helps.June 26, 2006 at 3:32 pm #10558Anonymous
InactiveThanks gals.
Christine-Yes, the whole theory from feeding clinic(and myself and dh) is that Ian associates Elecare with pain from the past. They think his brain clicks during feeds and self protects. Anytime we’ve tried Alimentum in the past-he guzzles it down. I think because it’s thicker as well. But we’re not allowed any milk/dairy trials for 3 more months. Also, I know they say taste isn’t an issue but I think it is at this age. I know Ian has preferences for food so what’s to stop him from saying ‘this stuff tastes like crap!” I certainly would. And I know what you mean, so frustrating waiting to try things. If it’s not an ear infection something else holds us up. His mood is better today but lots of gas so I’m going to hold off on rice I guess.
Hi Karen-They want him to try for 32 oz right now. The fat, iron, etc in formula for brain development. Until rice and proteins. He’s not eating a ton of solids and they have so few calories to pack pounds and with him not gaining. But I do agree-3 bottles would probably total the same. Any suggestions on day timing?? Think I should get rid of the 8:20? Thank you!

Inactive32 ounces seems SO high to me – but what do I know?! When are they letting you start proteins at least then?
As for timing, I’d probably try:
6:30 Wake
7am Prevacid
7:30 Bottle
9:15 Nap (at 9 months he can likely stay awake more than 2.5 hours in morning)
11 or 11:15 Lunch (fruit)
12:30/12:45 Bottle
1:45/2pm Nap
4pm Dinner (Veggies)
6pm Prevacid
6:30 Bottle
Bed

InactiveI know! Me too. We only ever hit 28 at most anyways. But the food he eats at 4oz a serving is only about 60 cal.=3oz. Ian needs equivlant of 32oz+ a day to grow right now because he’s so tall. And he really has slowed on growth. Cereal at least would compensate for iron instead of bottle whereas veggies/fruits don’t. More complete nutrition I guess. Drives me nuts.
Poor Ian-he’s having such a rough time of antibiotics! Much better then his first time on them at 5 months but still. Some minor diarrhea now, but major gas which I’m assuming is causing cramping. And big mucousy stools (which had all but gone away). I’m going to lay off cereal until after the weekend when through with meds. His digestive system can’t take it right now and probiotics I guess can only do so much. Still not even sure if he’s tolerating those but I’m sticking with it.
Thanks a bunch for the schedule advice-looks really good! I’m going to try it tomorrow and see if he’ll eat the same amount of formula. Can’t hurt? Although, if I switch, I doubt he’ll go back to four bottles.

InactiveI know – fruits and veggies alone don’t have much calories. But have
you tried avocado? TONS of calories and good fats. And if you can start
proteins that will help too.If it were me I’d drop to three bottles and not look back. Hopefully he
take close to 28 ounces anyway – can you also offer sips of it in his
sippy or straw cup with meals?I’d give any change like this at least a week to see how he adjusts…

InactiveOh Tracy, that’s so sad about Ian and Elecare. No baby should have to associate feeding with pain.
And I agreee that babies do have taste preferances that young. When Liza was 6 months old and I stopped pumping breast milk for her I started supplementing with formula. She quickly decided that she prefered the formula and began refusing breast milk to my great dismay. I had to mix them for a while and then she began to accept the breast milk again.
You’re right about the need for protein and fat at his age, and fruits and veggies just don’t provide that for them. That’s why I spoon feed Myles his breast milk all day instead of feeding him purees which would be so much easier.
Can you add the cereal to his bottle to thicken it since the elecare is so thin? Can you try oatmeal instead of rice? The oatmeal actually adds some flavor. I’ve tasted Myles’ oatmeal/breast milk concoction and it doesn’t taste bad at all. The rice is much blander in my opinion.
I hope his diarrhea clears up soon. Poor little guy.

KeymasterI’m also curious as to whether you can try something else other than a cereal…maybe if there’s a fruit or veggie he winds up liking & being able to tolerate, then you could mix that slowly w/ the cereal…
also, like karen says: avocado is a wonderful fat!

InactiveDarn! We decided to stay with just a tablespoon of rice a day while Ian’s on antibiotic-just to work with it and boy he really hates it. So funny because when we first attempted at 6 months, he loved it. Seems definitely texture. We tried new schedule and thankfully bottles seem ok-8oz, 7oz, so far. One more to go. As for meal, we did it later then usual-11am and he was less then enthused. I definitely think it’s the cereal as purees (since feeding clinic) have been going so well. I mixed it with banana and everything. I don’t see how I’ll ever get him up to the volume he would need to keep the bottles down to 3. If anyone has any other suggestions, I’ll take it. I also called feeding clinic.
Christine-Thanks for idea on oatmeal-we have to wait until 10 months to try it again because it went so poorly at 7.5 months. Although he is grunting on rice too…but I think he’ll even out. How much is Myles eating right now? Just curious since our babies are the same age. How much formula does he take? Good to know he’s growing-how tall/weight? Ian’s very muscular and stocky and was born big thankfully. He gained a ton in the beginning and we’re going off of that right now. He looks like a little boy now-very tall and getting thin-dh and I both notice it happening fast. He’s super cute!
Laura and Karen-yes I’ll definitely go for avocado soon! Any prep suggestions? Can I keep it in fridge (always a consideration because I travel to work. Do they have to be ripe? Laura, also not quite sure about your question no purees-Ian is tolerating several fruits and vegs now but so far will only eat cereal with banana..I’m going to try Christine suggestion and mix sweet potato in tomorrow.
June 27, 2006 at 1:35 pm #10650hellbennt
KeymasterI guess I just meant try the cereal w/ fruits he likes…
as for avocado- it does have to be ripe-
you can mash some up with formula or just plain
it can stay in the fridge but it will turn brown, like an apple would- it’s not bad, just brown
June 27, 2006 at 2:59 pm #10668Anonymous
InactiveDefinitely try it with sweet potato – Marisa LOVES cereal (albeit
oatmeal) with sp. Also with peas. She actually much prefers cereal
mixed with veggies than mixed with fruit – she’d rather have fruit
puree plain – no cereal. As Laura said, avocado does have to be ripe. Just mash it up like she
said or if he has an issue with the texture you can blend/puree it with
some formula.Glad the bottles are working out well so far!
